I don't think it's weird at all....
The real question is... are you going to be motivated to go to the gym? And, what is going to be the motivation to go to the gym.
My motivation will be my health. As a lot of you know, I am missing a leg [birth defect], and over the last year, it's been worse and worse walking on my ancient prostetic, and getting the government to help me get a new one so I can go back to work is about as useful as a me in an asskicking contest.
Well, thanks to that, I've been less mobile, and when I do go out, I wear my leg as little as possible. Less activity means that I've gained weight. Without giving the number away, I'm well over my comfort zone anymore, and I honestly don't have the motiviation to do it here, because there's too many distractions, amongst other things.
But, my leg issue is at the beginning of the end, luckily, so I'll be back to normal mobility within a few months [I hope]. So, to expedite that, once I'm back to normal mobility, aside from doing the normal things I did [random walks around the neighborhood and what not], I'm hitting the gym, and a few friends said they will join if I do, so I'll have a group, or at least one friend with me.
seriously though, Drak . . . like others have already stipulated, a proper diet is essential to bringing the whole workout thing full circle . . . in fact, it might even be more important than working out itself . . . point is, you could lose mad weight by just changing your diet . . .
This is true. I've actually been changing my diet a lot over the past couple of months, and I'm sure it's helped. I've cut out a lot of the sugary drinks [but I just CAN'T say no to a good glass of Chocolate Milk

], I eat a lot less, and what I do eat is generally better for me than what I used to eat all the time. Pardon the pun, but it's a small step opposed to the giant leap I want to make.
The answer to the first question of whether it makes you weird is... NO!
The answer to the second question as to whether it's actually pretty common is... YES!
Most people need some kind of motivation to work out and yours isn't out of the ordinary. If it motivates you to work out by going to the gym because you "don't want to look like a loser in front of people there", I say that's a good thing. Whatever that gets you to keep yourself healthy and in shape, y'know. I hope you have fun and remember, "no pain, no gain".
Well, I have a buddy who lives out of town who has a gym membership. I tagged along with him twice the last two times I was down there. He's getting into shape for Army Basic in a month or so, and I kept up with him [except for two exercises, which I had to substitute more weight for more reps because he was lifting more than I weight]. So, I'm pretty proud of that.
I'm not becoming some power crazy bodybuilder with orange skin and speedos or whatever. I just wanna get back down to my wrestling weight [~130]. I'm 5'9ish, and considering my missing leg, that adds up to being about where I need to be anyway.
