Tim Burton Developing ‘Addams Family’ Series, 'Wednesday' Starring Jenna Ortega

Would be nice to have Carol Kane in a future season too!

Wednesday and Film 101

I’ve been rewatching the series and I noticed some interesting/curious camera setups — which violate the so-called “180⁰ rule.” For example, in the following dialogue scene between Enid and Wednesday, the characters’ position in the frame alternates. In some shots Enid is at frame right looking left and Wednesday is at frame left looking right. But in other shots, the camera “crosses the line” and the positions are reversed. And this line crossing occurs several times. Yet, the result is fairly seamless. (Indeed, I didn’t even notice the unconventional camera placements on first viewing.)

Burton directed this particular episode. But other directors on the series have also played around with the “180⁰ rule.”

(The clip is 4:50 long. But the actual scene only takes up 1:45. The rest is an English grammar lesson for folks who speak some Slavic language.)

Apparently WEDNESDAY has popped up on Pro Weekly, revealing an unannounced season 3 renewal.

Finally watched this
Loved everything the setting, look, story, and most of the cast particularly Ortega, and several of her friends. Both Gwendoline Christie, and Christina Ricci were well used, Zeta Jones stunning as Morticia, and Fred Armisen was cervisable as Fester.

The only one I hated was Guzmán as Gomez, though he might somewhat look like Gomez, what a frikin useless no presence, drip of a character.
Gomez (both Astin and Julia captured it) is supposed to be eccentric, outrageously passionate, and enthusiastic about life. Especially at its worst, eager to face any situation.
]I guess Banderas, or Oscar Issac who ooze passion, yet can convey a dark mysterious side were out of reach.
Yet this guy was a weak, lifeless simpering wet toad, awful.

Also Pugsley was the original Dennis the Menace/Bart Simpson before either of those existed. Should be the embodiment of mischief fun, They made him a sad ineffectual wimp.

Visually, Guzmán (even down to his prosthetic teeth) is pretty accurate to Addams’ original drawings.

But I agree that he was a tad underwhelming in the part. At one point, Wednesday briefly describes her father as being into wacky “schemes” — which, I guess, invokes the characterization from the 60s TV show and movies. However, this is something we’re told rather than shown.

Though on the whole, I’d say the underdevelopment of Morticia and Gomez is a minor flaw. Wednesday is obviously the main protagonist; and her parents are just supporting characters (appearing in only two episodes). But apparently, Guzmán and Zeta-Jones have been promoted to series regulars for season two. So it’ll be interesting to see if they try to steer Guzmán a bit more towards the Astin/Julia interpretation.

Yeah Pugsley for me was the biggest error

Guzman was meh, but could be okay with some development

But the direction they went with Pugsley was just completely counter to how the character is usually portrayed

That seemed to be the norm once the 90's movies and television show came out.

It’s been claimed that season one had a kind of CW-ish romance/love triangle subplot. And TPTB (especially Ortega) have said this trope would be avoided in season two. By my reckoning, however, the S1 romance stuff was never overbearing or distracting. To the degree that Wednesday and Tyler seemed to have a predictable connection, this was nicely subverted by the Big Reveal. And the Wednesday/Xavier pairing, because of circumstances, never developed much beyond friendship. For S2, I’m fine with Wednesday being her own person — not defined by her love life. But IMO, that describes S1 too.

I didn't think it was overbearing. I think it was downright awful because the only chemistry Ortega had was with Meyers. And I think Ortega probably agrees that going with a very conventional love interest for a character like Wednesday is a bad idea. They didn't even write it like Values, where the relationship was very Addams.

I liked the idea, but neither the writing nor the On screen Chemistry made it work.
There is a way to write it more organic but i rather they dont do it if they cant find a way to do it the Addams way.
So im glad Season 2 seems to avoid it.

As much as im a little romantic at heart, i can do without it if a show is just shoehorning it in.
