Tim Burton is to be honored at the Venice International Film Festival later this year, for his contributions to the movie industry. The Batman director will receive the lifetime achievement award at the Italian festival which begins on August 29, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Organisers also declared on Wednesday that September 5 will be "Tim Burton Day" - a full 24 hours dedicated to the 48-year-old, whose credits include Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Well, I'm glad someone has respect for the man. Hopefully Hollywood will one day realize that as well. I mean...it's messed up that in 22 years he has only gotten ONE academy award nomination. He should be a 5-time nominee by now. Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood should have gotten Burton best picture and best director nominations. But...thats just me!

Burton's problem is that he's not a storyteller. That's what lets him down, and why he'll never be up there with the great Hollywood directors of his era.

Burton is a visual storyteller. Watching a Tim Burton movie is like looking at a painting. The story is through the images.

i hated charlie and the chocolate factory, but i loved everything else he's done (more or less) so... good for him.

I wish that were so, but what Burton does is create compelling characters amd atmosphere. Not stories.

The Batman movies aren't anything to write home about but I think this honor is much derserved.

I thought Big Fish had a pretty good story, as did Ed Wood.

but he's definately bettr at atmoshphere more then anything, sadly.

Alot of his movies I found weren't that great save for the scenary.

I disagree. I think his movies have pretty good stories. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, believe it or not, has a nice story. Beetlejuice, I guess, only has an idea and not a full fleshed story but its an hilarious flick. Its perhaps one of the most unique comedies in cinama history. Which is why many people love it. There's many comedies that deal with the afterlife like Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait, but no other has something as funny and creative as the waiting room scene. Batman and Batman Returns are two movies you and I have defended a million times at the Batman forums for being great movies! Edward Scissorhands is a brilliant re-imagining of the Frankenstein tale. Its a story of the outside and the misunderstood. Beautiful story if you ask me. Nightmare Before Christmas, which was written by Burton BTW, had another wonderful story. Ed Wood told the very amusing tales of the worst director of all-time. Mars Attacks was a movie that, I guess, didn't really have much of a story but it was a spoof of sci-fi movies and `70s disaster flicks so it doesn't really need a story. Sleepy Hollow is adapated from one of the earliest American tales and Burton did a great job. Planet, Big Fish, Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride all had pretty decent stories as well. And, the upcoming Sweeney Todd has a great story. Its based on one of the best broadway plays.

The Batman movies aren't anything to write home about but I think this honor is much derserved.

Well, he's being honored for more than the two Batman movies he's directed. I know this is a superhero forum but the man has done more than those two films.
