This is the third thread in the last few weeks on this kind of subject, I think the question is, 'What the hell is wrong with the folk on this board that they are obsessed with the sexualization of children'?

Of course, it is very bad, we all know that, three threads and counting though...folk are a bit desperate for attention i think, rather than seeking serious discussion.

Yes, I agree this is dumb, but compared to most of the awful things people do to kids this seems pretty tame to me. Stupid, but mostly harmless by comparison.

I am SO thankful my parents were strict about the clothes I wore back in the day. I wasn't even allowed to wear makeup until I was 16 or 17. And guess what? I was able to have a childhood.

I think it does, to be honest. I think it's criminal to teach children (very young ones, in this case) that their physical appearance matters. I mean, it's one thing to have a little girl raid her mom's makeup bag and play dress-up once in a while ... But it's another thing when her appearance is literally being judged on and that her life is revolving around these competitions.

I mean, yeah, I don't think it's a great idea, it's certainly a very stupid one, but there are much more widespread issues pertaining to children that are a much bigger deal that are worth getting upset over and trying to do something about a lot more than this.

I really question your priorities. I would think actual molestation and rape would rank higher than this. I would think that systematic sadistic physical and psychological abuse and/or torture would rank higher than this. Hell, I'd think a good chunk of the awful crap children have to deal with in our school systems would rank higher than this. This is stupid, and probably imparts shaky outlooks on things to kids, but to say this will ruin lives and subsiquent generations is pretty extreme. Raising a kid to be shallow and stupid is, well, shallow and stupid, but there are much worse upbringings much more deserving of being refered to as "ruined lives."

And, again, I said "one of", any physical harm is of course more detrimental to a child's immediate health.

Not in the same way that directly forcing the idea that a child has no worth whatsoever on a child on a daily basis is. Not in the same way locking a kid in a cloest for misbehaving is, or forcing them to sleep outside, or verbally tearing them down for things like wetting the bed or dropping dishes.

That's the thing, most of the unfortunate extreme instances you mentioned are typically rare i.e. locking a child in a closet, severe daily verbal abuse. Hell, my parents have made me sleep outside as punishment, and I'm sure we've all gotten "verbally torn down" by our parents at some point.

But these pageants represent an entire culture encouraging children to embrace this notion that physical appearance and superficiality rank supreme. These kids have been programmed by their parents since an extremely young age to seek value primarily in your physical appearance, and that is not how you should raise a child.

The unfortunate instances you mentioned can happen to any child, at anytime. The parents who enter their kids in these pageants actually raise these children this way, and the children, being children, happily go along with it. I think that is an enormous difference.

When I was a little girl, everyone told me I was beautiful. Because that's what you say to a little girl - 'oh, aren't you beautiful'.

It wouldn't matter if a little girl was fat, bald, deformed, scarred... If she came out of her room in a special little party dress you'd say 'oh, aren't you beautiful'.

Because EVERY little girl is a princess.

You tell them magic is real, you tell them dreams come true, and you tell them they are the most special precious thing in the whole world.

What you don't do, is tell them that they aren't prettier than that other girl. That their dress makes their bum look big, that their hair is too frizzy or their freckles are ruining their face. You don't teach them that wearing make-up and skimpy outfits is how to 'win' or they take that with them into life.

threads like this usually come in waves though, if you've been here long enough, you tend to realise this.

it's the media reaction to this as well, you also see the media become more sensationalised to stuff like this as well so more news stories on stuff become released even though it's not necessarily new news, it's just what happens to sell.

I laughed at the silliness of it all. And this is Toddlers & Tiaras, so it's not really shocking. Those guys are idiots (or pretend to be) for TV.

The Dad's usually leave the Mom's for a far better looking woman, thus the Mom develops a complex based on physical attractiveness and shoehorns it into their daughters mind, hence these pageants.
