This is a continuation thread, the old thread is [split]376731[/split]
Kind of random but...At the Heinz Field shoot, there was a self-confessed "comic-book nerd" sitting in close proximity to me. Other non-fans in the area asked him various things throughout the day. My favorite, they asked him what Bane's back story was, he said "He's a mexican wrestler". And everyone, of course, believed him.
I don't understand what is so cheesy about it? He doesn't come off as some stupid buffoon of a Mexican wrestler in the comics, so I don't know why you think that Bane has always been some kind of moronic type villain, before Nolan got his hands on him. The luchador mask is iconic to Bane and his background, there isn't anything cheesy about it, it just hasn't been properly done before in live action. It's almost like saying you can't do a proper Riddler, Two-Face, or Poison Ivy that looks similar to their counterparts, because Schumacher made a mockery out of them on film.Back onto the luchador thing, before someone actually does throw a stone at me. How many times have we seen the big antagonistic luchador archetype, I'm surprised Bane doesn't come out with tights and a belt, and even if he kept the mask the latin background just enforces the cheesiness of it. So I'm glad he doesn't have the mask, and I'm glad Nolan has decided to focus more on building a character than building Tom's already big muscles.
Yeah, I laughed when I saw that, too. He always comes up with those funny lines. But now I'm craving a $5 Thick Burger.Tom Hardees .
I have a question:
How much solid evidence do we have that Bane will be a member of the League of Shadows, a pupil of Ra's, and an ally of Talia? All I've been able to find was fan speculation and news reports from before filming even began that didn't seem very concrete (the same sources also said JGL will definitely be a villain allied with the League). The closest thing I can see to official proof is footage from trailers of Bane standing around people in what looks like League outfits, but that doesn't say a whole lot.
Has there also been any confirmation of Tom Hardy and Marion Cotillard being seen together on set?
I'm just tired of people tearing down aspects of the comic-books (calling them absurd, childish, or unrealistic) in order to talk up Nolan's approach. I never thought I would live to see the day where I would have to defend Catwoman's cowl, claws, whip, and other cat motifs in a community of Batman fans. I can barely go into the Catwoman Thread anymore because I have literally been stunned by the things people have said.I don't understand what is so cheesy about it? There seems to be guidelines of thought for these films:
Guy with a luchador mask on: absurd needs to be changed
Guy with a bat mask on: super cool and threatening
Guy with clown makeup on: the bestest thing around
Woman that looks like a cat: yet to be seen

I can't go into the Catwoman thread because it's just people pissing and moaning and reiterating the same point over and over and over againI'm just tired of people tearing down aspects of the comic-books (calling them absurd, childish, or unrealistic) in order to talk up Nolan's approach. Yet Bane hasn't exactly set the world on fire outside of Knightfall. It's irrelevant anyway, it's not the writers fault nor is it any flaw in his characterization, it's just the fans or the general public who goes to see these films. When you put a lucha mask on him, and make him of latin origins, it's very easy to generalize him in that archetype.
It's not so much bashing the comics as it is defending changes made for a film. I'm well aware some things that work in comics will never work well enough in a film, and it seems to be working out fine because instead of a roided out spanish wrestler type villain, we have tom hardy who looks and sounds like a creepy european dictator terrorist who can kick batman's ass. It's got my attention probably a hell of a lot more than if they stuck with the comics to appease a few fans who can't stand change.
But who is saying that Bane was stupid because of Shumacher and therefore makes the character as a whole including the comic version invaluable?
I just never thought of Bane as someone who could be a main villain, much less be in a Nolan Batman film. Yet he's both. Nolan has surprised us yet again when we were all sitting around saying how Riddler would be the most probable because we think we know Nolan better than Nolan. Bane has always been a good character, but now that I think about it, could you make that Bane a main villain in this vision or even another? I just don't see the exact Bane from the comics being the main villain of another Batman film. By himself even. This Bane is a terrorist dictator mercenary who's seemed to have a lot of notice around the world with a possible connection to the LOS. That makes him a huge threat on top of what he already can do. These are great changes that not only add to the character, but make him better. It fits.
There are preferences. I've loved Bane already and I'm not ignoring the comics, I just think Nolan is making changes to fit the narrative and for him to be more of a lead villain in effecting Bruce's journey in these films. But I'm just loving this Bane more all around. I never liked the luchador mask though. That's something you can do away with that doesn't really have an effect on the quality of the character. And it's not very iconic. Bane just isn't a character like the Joker where there's things that need to stay. The luchador mask is nowhere near as essential as Joker's colors. Bane's just is a lesser known character who isn't as defined as the Joker to most people, therefore he gives more flexibility to do more things to. Joker was pretty much the Joker, and his terrorist and anarchist acts were enchanced upon for the context of Nolan's vision. Those were enhancements to the overall character but it fits Joker like a glove. Joker is just more defined and more developed over the years where he's pretty much a given greta main villain. Bane not so much. It's why it was the right move to go from someone iconic like the Joker to a lesser known villain like Bane.
And if you can make it better, why not? He's still Bane. He's big, strong, and someone who will effect Batman psychologically and physically and just put him through a ****storm of hurt. Perhaps more than what we've already seen. People are too conservative with changes. And I don't see people dismissing the comic Bane. I've just seen people saying how he seems to be shaped into a better version.

Graham Nolan is a great artist, and he made Bane very threatening.
Even as a kid, his appearance did nothing for me. It's the one case from the comics where I think it was a good idea to change his look. Well, that and making Blade black. Coolest idea ever.
You know it's weird, when I first read Knightfall so many years ago I never once considered Bane's mask to be that of a Luchador, always seemed more like ninja like, really when I look at Bane I don't think "Luchador", I actually think "Prison rape" of all things, which thematically works with his background and generally attitude towards life.
The Mexican wrestler characterization came from Bruce Timm

Umm wasn't Blade always black?
Blade was always black.
