Netflix suddenly and very quietly releasing a bunch of good movies. ATHENA and THE STRANGER are excellent. BLONDE divisive but I think it has some cinematic merit. Just started THE GOOD NURSE but so far it's quite good. And they have THE WONDER and THE PALE BLUE EYE coming soon.

Just finished ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Wow. I don't even like war movies but the filmmaking and performances are so good in this one. The themes hit with great power and clarity. Unforgettable, haunting imagery and music/sound design.

All the technical excellence of the best war films but also really potent storytelling.

Top 5 movie of the year for me so far, definitely.

One of the most nihilistic endings to a film in a long time...

I loved it.

 

This is me with All Quiet on the Western Front lol. I know it will be good, but I never liked the original and I have the hardest time getting into the mood for war movies anyway. But I know I'll get to it at some point.

 

The only thing I wish I'd caught before posting this is Tar but I'm going to wait for that one to get an award season rerelease to see on the big screen next year and I don't care to wait to make this list anymore.
