Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of travelling to New Zealand in the future but I want to know what public transport is like first. I won't have a car so can I easily get around? The places I want to go to are Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington and kaikoura

This is in no way a criticism, because I love travelling too, but jeez almost all your threads have to do with going some place, like Berlin, Japan and New Zealand. Just something I noticed about you Silvermoth. Like I said, not a criticism by any means.

You're in Australia. Shouldn't be that hard or expensive to get to New Zealand. I went to Christchurch and the rest of the South island in '95 with my family when I was a kid. I was about 12, so my memories aren't that great, but I do remember loving Christchurch. This was of course before the terrible earthquake in 2011. I do know that devastated a lot of Christchurch and specifically destroyed a historical church I remember visiting as a kid. So I don't know how that's affected the overall mood or atmosphere of the city. But I bet it's still a beautiful place and if it has affected them, they could probably use your tourist dollars right now.

Besides that I remember we went to some waterfalls further south where Willow was filmed (quite possibly where LOTR was filmed, but since this was 1995, Willow was the most famous American movie to be filmed there). I don't remember much other than that. But I have many friends from New Zealand and it's by all accounts a terrific and beautiful country and I plan on going back one day. In fact a friend of mine is getting married there in a year, so I kind of have to if I want to attend his wedding.

Hope you get there soon.

G'day!

In regards to public transport, you can get a bus pretty much anywhere. I can't speak for the trains in any of the other major cities beside Auckland, but they have a fairly decent system if not a punctual one. That is to say, Auckland trains are notorious for running late.

Wellington is a great town for walking around. You can walk around the central business district of Auckland (mostly Queen Street) but it's all one big hill. Wellington is flat and just a generally more laid back and cool place to wander about.

If you do end up going, be sure to check out the West Coast beaches in Auckland like Bethells, Muriwai and Whatipu. Muriwai and Whatipu especially will blow you away. Also (if you do go) fire me a PM and I'll tell you how to get to a sweet waterfall/swimming hole/bush trek that not many people know about.

if you've ever seen the movie the Rescue. The North Korean fortress is reportedly still there. lol

I've wanted to visit New Zealand ever since I saw LOTR for the first time. Just an absolutely beautiful place. Seems to have really good fishing opportunities as well. Nice people and atmosphere too.

If you're going I recommend the small village in the South Island called Whikikamucau.

Ha, yeah I love to travel! Thanks everyone this is all very interesting!

I've always wanted to visit New Zealand and Australia. I feel like something is calling me, perhaps some day I will go.

Me too, man. Traveling is one of my passions. I'm lucky enough to have been to over 20 countries already and on all continents except Antarctica. I would really like to cross Iceland, Burma (Myanmar), Spain and Turkey off my list next.

Spain and Iceland wow that sounds amazing. I want to go there too!
