Was just reading a zap2it article about theme songs being on their way out and becoming extinct. So was wondering if you are pro-theme song or just pro-title card?

And what are the best openings?

Theme songs are nice. There's nothing wrong with them and there's nothing wrong with not having them. They're just a tool the creators can use or choose not to use in order to create an atmosphere with their absence. I don't have a problem with shows not using them. But I would be sad if they dissapeared altogether.

And, obscure show, but this is my favorite TV opening:

Most shows with no theme may say its for "atmosphere" or for longer episodes, but its obviously to make time for more commercials.

Couple of the biggest shows on TV have theme songs and pretty much all cable shows do so I'm thinking they are here for some time. People identify with these songs.

I don't think it really matters if a show has a theme song or not. I doubt theme music is on its way to extinction though.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer had a great musical opening which didn't detract from the shows stories at all. So did Angel.

Supernatural has a very similar feel to it as Buffy and Angel, yet it has no theme music. All three shows are equally enjoyable though, IMHO.

It's so iconic that you instantly think of Bill Bixby making the lonely journey down to his next catastrophe.

Now that's the greatest opening theme song. I just got the whole series on DVD at Sam's Club for 15 bucks the other day.

YEah, I just picked up the last season on DVD the other day...this show and Sliders are two of my favorite shows ever.

Way before my time, but I can admit it is one of the coolest theme songs ever.

many shows in the 80s/90s had openings. it's really rare to see that now, especially in comedies/sitcoms. you now mainly see it on dramas

One of the many, many favourite things about Community is their theme song.

And then The 88 turned the short theme song into an actual one for the release of the soundtrack.

Rarely skip Mad Men and The Walking Dead's themes if I watch it on DVR or DVD.

The first two seasons were the best but its to bad Sliders ended on a cliffhanger

it depends really. Sitcom Comedies are ok, but dramas like LOST and The Walking Dead like shows don't really need them.

A good tv theme and intro can get you really excited for a show so I hate to see them go away. Some shows can do fine without them and aren't suited for themes/intros but when there's a good one they tend to stick with you.
