From CBS News:

CBS News has confirmed that Peter Steele, front man for Type O Negative, has died.

In an email, Mike Renault, the band's manager said, "Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That's all the details we have right now."

Type O Negative's Web site left a message to their fans this morning around 5:15 AM. It read, "The forums have been re-opened. Please play nice and expect statements from the band and family later today. Thank you for your understanding and support."

Upset fans have been writing on Type O Negative's MySpace page mourning the death of the singer. Some posts said, "RIP Peter, you will be missed" and "I just heard the news and I can't even function."

Steele, whose real name is Petrus T. Ratajczyk and hailed from Brooklyn, N.Y., was known as a bassist, singer, and as the band's website said, a "control freak." The 6'7'' composer of gothic metal was also known for his dark humor and low heavy voice.

Before joining Type O Negative, he was in the metal group Fallout and the band Carnivore.

Seen them 6 times, one of my favorite bands. Peter had issues with substance abuse, family issues & deaths, and arrests (for severely beating a guy he caught with his GF), but despite what I thought of the guys private life I always loved his music.

RIP Green Man

I was shocked to hear the news. I actually knew Pete in passing, he dated a friends of mine for a while so he and I used to hang from time to time. RIP man.

Very sad news, I've been listening to Type O all day today.

A true legend and hero was taken way too soon. His words were able to get me through the worst parts of my life. Type O Negative was one of the most unique bands I’ve ever heard. “October Rust” is STILL my favorite album of the last fourteen years. Peter Steele was a true original, and will be missed. A sad, sad day in music.

Very sad news. Me and my band wanted to cover TON's Dead Again during our gigs next month, but now, I think it might be in bad taste...

Don't quote the trolls, please, guys, it only encourages them.

Given Peters dark & dry sense of humor, I don't think it would be all that disrespectful.

I guess I missed a whole thing after I replied to that post. Yeah, Pete had a great sense of humor. One thing sticks out in my mind so clearly, one night we were all at the bar drinking and we decided to go outside and set off some fireworks and Pete had fallen asleep inside. So there we are setting off fireworks and Pete comes rushing out with holding a garbage can over his head, screaming in Klingon. Hilarious.

Damn. Pete made some great music. I'll crank some Carnivore and Type O Negative in memory.

Yeah, we decided to do it anyway. Though at this point, we're gonna perform it as a dedication more than just a cover.

agreed. bummed i never got to see him live :(
