LONDON - A British soccer fan has been jailed for 12 months for punching a police horse in the head after his team lost a derby match.

Barry Rogerson was one of several fans arrested after violence erupted following Newcastle United's 3-0 loss to Sunderland on April 14. Clashes between their fans aren't uncommon because of the fierce rivalry between both teams.

The 45-year-old Rogerson, who was drunk, first clapped in the face of, then punched Bud, a horse working for West Yorkshire Police.

Judge Paul Sloan sentenced him Thursday to 12 months in prison for violent disorder and banned him from attending any soccer matches in the U.K. for six years.

Sloan said the officer riding Bud could have easily been thrown off the horse and been badly hurt.

Haha, I really don't think they needed to mention that he was drunk. I'm pretty sure that was to be assumed right off the bat.

Serves him right for being an ass-hat.

"Honor and fear were heaped upon his name and, in time, he became a king by his own hand ... and this story shall also be told."

In the good ole US of A if you kill one of the police dogs they will charge you just like you killed an officer. They consider them active duty animals

Isn't it treated as assaulting a police officer? I thought I heard something that if someone hits a police dog, it's treated by law the same as if it were a human cop. Maybe it's the same thing with police horses? :hmm

I think that depends on the country. In the U.S. it's the same as assaulting a human officer in most places but in the U.K. apparently not. Or not in this case.

Mongo no go. Mongo stay with Sherrif Bart. Sherrif Bart first man ever whip Mongo. Mongo impressed. Have deep feelings for Sherrif Bart.

@NickNitro, first thing I thought of.

I think the horse should have retaliated by kicking the guy in the face.

I swear, the UK is a nation full of Raiders fans. You don't know how to watch a game and keep it together in public at the same time.

Brazilian footbol aka soccer has any of them beat - Beware graphic clicking will lead you down dark path questioning all humanity, you have been warned! - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ed-Angry-fans-head-stake-stabbing-player.html

Not sure if this story wasn't widely disseminated because of how horrific it is, but I always laugh when people in Europe or US or anywhere talk about how wild or out of control their sports fans are.

We had a thread about that around the time it happened but it's still a terrible story to read.

I pictured it more like this...and I bet the drunk guy did too.

At least he didn't try to behead it with one swing of a sword like in GoT.

He may have thought it was Bad Horse and he was trying to protect us.

Football hooliganism all across Europe is getting out of hand. The amount of antisocial behavior/heinous political ideologies being conflated with the sport is ridiculous. Same thing goes for a lot of South America. This guy fully deserves the year in jail though.
