I don't think they are clones at ALL.

Look at all the signs...
One of the most obvious being May saying something like, "Oh Peter... Stop running from your life... just like your father" in the Warriors arc. Which happens to be the same arc where she tells him that if he lies to her again.. he gets kicked out! So now she finds out he lied and he gets kicked out. Running from his life... just like Richard.
Both are real. Bam!

more than likely if it was bigger, there aren't that many characters that have crossed paths with spidey so far, it's a matter of a lil guess work to plug in the less obvious gaps
