I've been playing a couple of games that were pretty much ignored besides getting good ratings - binary domain and vanquish.
it got me thinking what other games have been great but over shadowed by the call of duty type stuff...
what do you reckon...i have PS3 and wold like to know of some other games that were great but seemed to pass me by..

Singularity is pretty underrated and for the PS3. Condemned 1 and 2 are pretty big cult hits, too. Valkyria Chronicles is one I've heard mentioned quite a bit.

I have to mention The Punisher (2004), even though it's a past gen game. That game was a ton of fun. The multipliers on kills and such were addictive. It managed to somehow ride the line between the MAX books and the Marvel Knights books with some of the mentions of other heroes, I remember a level taking place in Stark Towers. And Thomas Jane voicing Frank Castle, even though it had nothing to do with the film out the same year.

Everyone who played last year's XCOM: Enemy Unknown seemed to love it, though how many people actually got it is probably far lower than the game deserved. A really great game with tons of replay value and vastly different from anything else on the shelves. If you haven't given XCOM a whirl, you definitely should.

"Castlevania: Lords of Shadow" is a must play. I feel this game is under-appreciated. The game offers amazing visuals and "God of War" style gameplay. You can buy it fairly cheap on Amazon.

Would wholeheartedly recommend every game that's been mentioned so far.

To build on those - the Yakuza series is one of the best times you can have on PS3, Resistance 3 is one of the best FPS' of the generation and Spec Ops: The Line is a really great story wrapped into an accessible and fun TPS.

I honestly mean this (but part of me just wants to see some people squirm),I really enjoyed DmC: Devil May Cry

Prince of Persia (2008)

It was like playing poetry.

It's a shame Sega seems to have given up on bringing the Yakuza series to the west though. :csad:

The entire Metal Slug series. I never see it being mentioned here, but those games are so fun.

Actually, dude, based on some of the recommendations we've got for you so far, I would tooootally pick up PlayStation Plus right now.

Right now that would give you instant access to some of the game's we've mentioned like XCOM: Enemy Unknown but also the utterly incredible Catherine, the sensational Demon's Souls, the PS2 classic ICO (as well as Shadow of the Colossus), Double Fine's obscure gem The Cave, and the much-loved Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and that's just in the 'underrated' category. Next month you can add the awesome Payday: The Heist to that list.

DEADLY PREMONITION!!!

PS2+ graphics, fighting/shooting is stiff and a bit awkward (last minute addition by management) but it is amazing. The story was mind blowing and every single character in the game has a good backstory and individual personality with interesting quirks. I honestly cried a bit at the end of the game. It was that good a story. The people actually move around town during the daytime so you won't always find them stuck in one place, it has a day/night system and they all close up and go home at night. There's tons of mini games, side quests and backstory to find out and nothing until the end of the game is forcing you to do the story until you feel ready.

Just remember to go to bed before midnight...

I'd say Alpha Protocol. The gameplay is passable but the story, characters and rpg elements are fantastic

Skullgirls. It might be challenging as heck, but it's also extremely fun, with an awesome cast of characters and a unique setting and mythology.

The first game that comes to mind would be Extermination for the PS2. The story is pretty similar to The Thing and the gameplay is like Resident Evil. It's a great game and I've never seen anyone talk about it.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
I love you. SH is really the most underrated of the series, and it is so good too. Silent Hill 4 is also underrated.

Eve of Extinction is one I literally never heard another person talk about. I got it for around $10 years ago on the PS2. ITs a 3D brawler that you start with two weapons a blue sword, and a red staff, and basically the starting enemies are harmed more by either red or blue, then the first boss gives you...I actually don't recall its been so long but like a purple weapon, and the following boss might be hurt by the red staff and they'll give you a yellow weapon, and the next boss will be hurt by the purple weapon, and so on. I don't recall the story very well but I had a ton of fun with that game.

Earthbound (SNES)
Azure Dreams (PS1)
Mr. Mosquito (PS2)

I still own it but unfortunately have no platform to play it on. I guess I could look into a PS2 emulator on the PC, but I havent tried. Awesome game and its a shame no sequel has been made
