I thought he was going to be an anthropormorphic CGI creation like Gollum or something, and there's no explaination why he and Polly exist in this world, they just DO. The old cartoon didn't need to justify it, so the movie shouldn't have to. When directors start taking the "based in reality" concept for kid's superhero flicks, you know it's gotten too far gone.
