At the end of Underworld: Evolution, Michael (now a hybrid) and the Death Dealer known as Selene faced an uncertain future. This made fans especially voracious for a third chapter, however, they were hit with a modicum of surprise when Lakeshore and Screen Gems announced the anticipated threequel - Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - was indeed a prequel.

Patrick Tatopoulos, director of the Lycan-heavy upcoming chapter, tells us co-creator Len Wiseman "has a concept of what the next film will be" and it may mean a forward progression of Michael and Selene's story. Although, "At this stage, where we're at now, I would personally love to go back to the future. You can explore a lot of things, however, with our film, we've opened the door to other interesting projects. It could be [another] period film."

One thing Tatopoulos is sure of is that the Underworld franchise is no longer largely dominated by the vampires anymore. His installment focuses heavily on the Lycans. "Our film is less sophisticated - not in a bad way. It's more refined. This is a guy film with blood and sweat."

The release date is January 23, 2009.

And Len Wiseman said in an interview a few months ago, that he would love for a fourth film to follow the events after evolution. So if the third film (Rise of the Lycans) is successful then there should be a fourth film on the way.

Would Kate do the 4th? She did say that she wanted to wait a while before ever doing another Underworld movie. I think i'm more excited to see a "maybe 4th" than this new movie, just cuz Kate could be in it.

I think Kate would do the film. I'm very excited for the third film. I think it has a huge chance of being successful.

I loved the first two films. It's a different kind of Underworld film, though, and Kate isn't in it so that may hurt the box-office. From I've seen from the film so far, it looks really great.

Did you see the footage at Comic-Con???

I do agree that without Kate it may hurt the Boxoffice, but what could happen is that since Everyone loved the first 2 wit Kate, they just may go see this cuz Kate made the series so enjoyable and it may make more than the 2nd or 1st one.

And no, I didn't see the footage, but the pictures look pretty cool and very in tone with the first two.

I have to admit, that Rhona looks hot as Sonja and very sexy in that one pic. But in my book no on can beat Kate.

I love the new pictures I feel a new avvy coming on, frakking sweet! Film looks awesome I do hope it does well, as by reading those above interviews a 4th one would be cool!! As I would like to know what will happen with Selene and Micheal and plus Beckinsale kicked ass.
