Well these are real vampires and not just blood hungry super humans with angst and love but nobody to share it with.

EXCL: Where Does Underworld Turn Now?

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans propels fans of the franchise way back before the events of the first two entries to establish the friction between the vampire race and the Lycans. It not only provides a modicum of closure to some unanswered questions but it also fulfills the vision of Len Wiseman, co-creator and director of the previous films.

ShockTillYouDrop.com caught up to Wiseman at the red carpet premiere of the new film (on which he serves as producer) tonight to ask...where does Underworld go now? One could say the narrative can push forward following the events after Underworld: Evolution. Or, Wiseman and company could play around in the years between Lycans and the first picture.

"We'll see what happens with this one," Wiseman says. "They're now a bit more open. There was always a hope that there were three films we could tell - so we've completed that trilogy we've talked about. There are many places we can go. If people are willing to go back, they're willing to go forward."

Well, that sounds like we might see more of Selene and Michael. "I'm kind of flirting with ideas of what would take place in the future. I'm just glad people are accepting that we can jump around in the time line and people are interested. Hopefully they'll be willing to accept different stories because the characters are there and they're immortal. It would be fun to go forward again."

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opens in theaters today!

'Underworld' Franchise Becoming a TV Series?
While on the red carpet for Sony Screen Gems' Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, we caught up with UNDERWORLD creator Len Wiseman who reveals that the franchise might not be done yet. "There's a lot of talk about a television series, Im looking into that," he tells B-D exclusively, "if I could be very involved and can be a certain way, I'd be very interested in that." He continues, "We had always hoped to do a trilogy, now that we completed that trilogy it's kind of open, if people can join us and go back in time - and then leap forward, I'd like to go jump all across the time line." There you have it, a possible UNDERWORLD TV series in the works that could take us all across the timeline of Death Dealers vs Lycans.

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans
Review by Ron Henriques

"Underworld: Rise of the Lycans!" Say it a few times and it does have a nice ring to it. The 'Underworld' films have been a decent little series that took elements from similar genre pictures like 'Blade', 'The Matrix", 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Terminator' and made a set of movies that felt like something new. There's nothing really new about this trilogy of a battle between Vampires and Werewolves, but there is a degree of a cool factor that can't be denied and its parts are better than its whole. It kick started the career of director Len Wiseman (who went on to make a pretty fun 'Die Hard' picture) and made an unlikely action heroine out of Kate Beckinsale.

For this third chapter, or prequel, Beckinsale has opted out, while Wiseman hands the director's chair over to underrated production designer Patrick Tatopoulos. Tatopoulos was responsible for the look of the previous films and is so adored by former collaborator Roland Emmerich that he named the Matthew Broderick character in his 'Godzilla' after him. There honestly isn't much for Tatopoulos to do because even though the stories originate with Wiseman, these films basically write themselves. Though there is credible conflict and drama, the films are nothing but Vampires and Werewolves fighting each other in stylized ways.

As the villain turned misunderstood freedom fighter in the original 'Underworld', Michael Sheen takes center stage, returning as the leader of the Werewolves, make that Lycans, Lucien. Sheen has risen to prominence in films with recent roles in 'The Queen' as Tony Blair and as David Frost in the currently playing 'Frost/Nixon". Though he's the lead in an action movie, "Rise of the Lycans" is very much his film, written for him by Wiseman. It's the least the guy can do right? Afterall Wiseman ended up marrying Sheen's longtime girlfriend and "baby momma" Beckinsale after the first film.

Set in Medieval times (where apparently the hot Vampire chicks wore leather belly shirts), we get to see how the Lycan slaves rose up against their Vampire masters. When Vampires and Werewolves were spawned by the sons of Corvinus, Marcus and William, the mindless beasts that howled at the moon were originally unable to change back into human form. That changed when one of them spawned a human baby that became Lucien. As the first of his kind, a Lycan, who had the ability to change from human to wolf at will, Viktor (Bill Nighy) the ruthless leader of the Vampire coven decided to spare his life rather than kill him. He would use this boy to transform human slaves into Lycans, made to protect their Vampire masters while they slept during daylight hours.

As Lucien grew into a man he also secretly grew to love Viktor's only daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra), the most beautiful woman of all Vampires and a cunning warrior. Though it was believed that she despised Lucien and saw him as nothing but an inferior slave, this was all a ruse to keep their love affair a secret. Lucien holds no ill will towards his masters and even has no qualms with killing the mindless werewolves that frequently attack their castle. He only yearns to eventually escape with his freedom and hopefully take Sonja with him.

Events are set into motion when Lucien disobeys Viktor's edict and removes his slave collar so he may change into a werewolf to defend Sonja from an attack by the beasts. Though he should be grateful, Viktor repays Lucien by having him punished with thirty lashes and plans his execution. To save her love from being made an example of by Viktor's cruelty, Sonja plays a part in Lucien's escape and with him go several Lycan slaves looking for their own freedom. Now declared an immortal enemy by Viktor, Lucien realizes that the only way his kind can be free is to rise up against their masters and mount an army.

'Rise of the Lycans' is meant to be a historical look back at the saga that is "Underworld" and capable actors like Sheen, Mitra, Nighy and Steven Mackintosh (returning as the schemer Tannis) bring some dramatic weight to material that's nothing more than supernatural/sci-fi. But most of the film feels like a rehash of material we already know. Not only was much of this material referenced in the first film, but the most dramatic turn of the story was actually shown with Mitra's character played by another actress. In simple terms, the story is basically Lucien wanting his freedom with the girl he loves, but her daddy who won't have his rule questioned does everything in his power to punish or kill them both.

There is a great percentage of the film where Nighy and Sheen, two classically trained actors, are eloquently speaking Wiseman's dialogue towards each other (followed by snarling and growling), while Sheen gives a rallying cry to his fellow Lycans once too often. One element that works is the relationship between Lucien and Sonja. Both Sheen and Mitra do seem like they would truly die for the other and there is a great degree of heat between them. Unfortunately, much of that dramatic power gets lost in the action, with sequences and fights that do indeed look cool, but just seem a little too familiar. Also familiar is the film's look that both Tatapoulos and Wiseman are responsible for including that blue nighttime tint that was pioneered by John Carpenter decades earlier.

There's entertainment to be found in the picture and it does have its moments, because you don't come to see these movies for a dramatic story. You come to see them for the action and there's plenty of it within its less than 90 minute running time. "Underworld' was a success because Wiseman and co-writers Danny McBride & Kevin Grevioux (who also returns as Lucien's right hand Raze) managed to come up with a decent story that had an even more fascinating back-story. Now that they've given us all the details, that back-story doesn't seem so interesting anymore. Except for a few cool moments of bloodshed and the dramatic turn of events around Lucien and Sonja's relationship, all of this feels like something you've seen already.

anybody see it yet jw what the verdict is on it cuz my bro and me are fans of the movies

I love Rhona Mitra but i'll wait for dvd for this...

I thought it was a decent movie not great, but not too terrible. Not to give stuff away for ppl who haven't seen it..

Some of my gripes of the movie: the death of Sonja was different than what was shown in flashbacks in Underworld. So, that kindof got me disappointed.
The Celene scene was not needed and kinds of takes away even though it weas last scene of movie. If they wanted to add her in someway they should of shown viktor/Kraven killing her family not the boat sceen..
Fight scenes were dark and hard to follow bad editing imo..Lastly, Vicktor and some of the other vamps looked way too pale imo...
Some good: the Kate knockoff she was just as hot as Kate imo...Decent story though could of elaborated more.Enjoyed Raz and how him and Lucian met..CGI was good for the wolves.
Overall a decent movie a tad slow in spots and lack of character depth..give 5.5/10

If they do another one I liked them to continue where this one left off. Touch on Celenes story, and go into the Kraven/Lucian partnership..

I personally enjoyed the film. I thought with the runtime of being only an hour an a half, it was really well paced but the film should have been another 15 minutes. I had a few gripes, I thought Sonja deserved more minutes in the film, and I'm not sure the ending was right. I think it could have used a little more time aswell.

The CGI was pretty good, along with the transformation scenes. The action/directing of the action was pretty splashy and I think it kindaof took a little bit away from the sword fights.

Sonja (played by Rhona Mitra) was excellent, and Lucian was fantastic. I thought you really cared for Lucian, again Sonja needed a little more time to develop her character. The action (Swords, Spears, Crossbows) was unique to see in the Underworld. I really liked how they continued from evolution a good bit of gore.

I enjoyed the film a good bit. Rise of the Lycans was a little too short, but very fast paced was just a good fun enjoyable popcorn flick.

B-D Review: 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans'

When I found out that Sony Screen Gems wasn’t screening UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS for critics, I immediately cringed. After the multiple screenings and excitement behind QUARANTINE back in October, it was obvious there was inherent fear in Sony’s eyes. It was for good reason, but to the defense of director Patrick Tatopoulus, it wasn’t that bad….

While I was waiting for the film to start, these two young boys next to me were talking to me about horror films and such. What I found interesting was that they were genuine fans of the franchise, as in they own the first two and were immersed in the mythology (supposedly) created by Len Wiseman. Obviously a big portion of their obsession came from the pure sex appeal of the beautiful Kate Beckinsale, who they were hawking for the entire time we waited (she never showed). Either way, I was fascinated by their allegiance to UNDERWORLD and the two sequels and it also made it clear why LYCANS was made. Only the hardcore UNDERWORLD uber-fan will like this movie, for everyone else it’s just a generic love story done 1,000 times before (even in the first film back in 2003).

LYCANS takes a trip back to the absolute beginning, where Vampires were holed up in castle and Lycans (werewolves) roam free in the wild. We bare witness to the birth of Lucian, played by Michael Sheen (snubbed for an Academy Award Nominee for FROST/NIXON), who is the first human form Lycan. The leader of the vampires, Viktor (Bill Nighy), imprisons him and makes him a servant to the vampires. Queue side love story of Sonja (Rhona Mitra), who is secretly sleeping with the enemy (Lucian). The love is forbidden (the ROMEO & JULIET angle used to pitch the first film) and causes a rift between father and daughter, and daughter and her allegiance to her clan. The Lycans would break free and a never-ending war is unleashed upon the world.

For the fans of the franchise, they’ll find all sorts of little “moments” that give a wink and a nod in their direction. They can giggle and talk amongst themselves saying things like, “So that’s how it happened!” For everyone else, there’s endless exposition and a story so generic I’m quite sure the same story was told in the Bible (of course sans vampires and werewolves).

While the screenplay wasn’t as hammy as I figured it might be, they do write the vampires and werewolves in such a trite way that it’s just bland and forgettable. What really kills the mood is the costume design mixed with the dialogue. The Lycans act and look like they might actually be from the “Hercules” or Xena” TV series. They have long unkempt hair, are dirty, wear brown leather wristbands from Hot Topic and give long horrid speeches about being free. On the other hand, the vampires have a pretty solid pseudo medieval-otherworldly look to them, and having Bill Nighy leading the pack can only help the cause. Rhona Mitra, who you might remember from DOOMSDAY, does a solid Kate Beckinsale impersonation, which is obviously what they were hoping for when they cast her.

Beyond the generic plot, there are some nice action set pieces that include some competent shooting and plenty of gore. When the practical FX work was on, we see great stuff that ranges from werewolf beheadings to incredible puppetry, while other times in the background you could see ridiculous looking werewolves that were obviously humans walking around in a costume. And for a director that’s been in special FX since 1993, it’s unforgivable how bad some of the CGI is, especially in moments where it was completely unnecessary. Rule of thumb: ALL CGI blood looks like *****. But whoever worked on the werewolves running through the moonlight did a stunning job. There were some real standout moments in terms of the CG elements, too bad for every good shot there was one equally as bad.

While the movie isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s just as forgettable, if not more than, the first two UNDERWORLD films. There’s absolutely nothing original or interesting that happens within the 92 minutes; it’s probably best to save your money and go see Sheen in FROST/NIXON instead.

Score: 4 / 10

I think that anyone who didn't at least rate this movie a 7/10 must have a distained hate for these movies in general. The quality of this movie was fantastic, and is personally one of my favorite movies of all time, and the best movie of this series thus far. Michael Sheen was totally ready to take over as lead, and Mitra did a better job as Sonja than I had predicted. Bill Nighy gave one of the best vampire performances I've ever seen to date. I could go on and on, but I'll just say I thought the film was great, and I loved every minute of it.

9/10

Agreed, I was going in thinking that maybe it might not live up to my expectations, I'm so glad I was wrong.

Please don't click if you haven't seen the movie.

How awesome was it that Viktor survived getting stabbed in the mouth with a sword, and getting owned by Lucian?

This wasn't too bad...more than I expected.

i just saw it...
it was awesome

this is easily rohna mitra best role.. probably ever too.
i always thought she was just a pretty face... but she acts great in this.
and michael sheen is amazing

perfect prequel.. the ending was shot for shot like the flashbacks in the first movies.

i like all the films equally.

and to add... this is the best vampire or werewolf...or vamp/werewolf movie period

sexiest werewolves ever too...lol

Agreed, I thought everything was just so well done, and they stepped up the bar for all vampire/werewolf movies. For me, Bill Nighy has the coldest, and most badass vampire performance to date.

I think these movies kicks Blades ass. I am seeing this tomarrow and then maybe Ink Heart.
