The talk about the long developmental process for Superman Returns and a joke made about Kevin Smith writing Aquaman 2 in Entourage got me thinking about this. I'm a huge fan of Smith's View Askewniverse (they rank among my all-time favorite films), but look at what has happened with his non-Askewniverse films. I read newsaskew.com occasionally, but haven't seen updates or news on some of these films in forever. He was supposed to be onboard for Fletch Won and Green Hornet, and I don't think either script was ever even finished, much less greenlit. So, what's the deal with Smith?

During Superman I heard that he is very married to the scripts he likes and doesn't like a lot of changes made to them, however with Superman this is somewhat hyperbole, since those producers were such pricks to all the Superman writers.

He is a lazy bum thats what! He took 3 years to finish a comic MINI! series thats how lazy he is!

well, I know the story behind Superman Lives, but I was really wondering about Green Hornet and Fletch. I know he was writing GH at one point. Also, I know he was really pushing for Jason Lee, then I believe Ryan Reynolds, for Fletch.

The studio took over Fletch to move it away from Smith's dialogue-driven script and make it more slapstick. Before Smith left, he was rumored to be courting Zach Braff for the lead, after the studio had turned down Jason Lee.

As for Green Hornet. . Kevin psyched himself out of it. He wrote it, but then convinced himself he wasn't good enough to direct the thing. John Woo was rumored to be circling it at one point, but I think it's barely being developed now.

damn, I would love to see Braff delivering Smith dialogue.

Really? I didnt know that. I thought he left because the studio didnt want Lee in the lead role.

Braff in a Smith film would be pretty cool though.

I think that's all how it went down. I'm a member over at the View Askew boards, so Fletch was pretty much the talk of the town for a while. It's been over a year ago now, so my memory might be fuzzy. . . but I'm pretty positive that's what happened.

Now, Kevin Smith has been talking very little about his next project, to the point that all we know is "non-Askewniverse comedy." Since 40 Year-Old Virgin, Smith has been saying he wants to work with Seth Rogen. So, hopefully, we might see that tandem one day. And if Braff gets in there too. . . God I would love to see that movie.
