'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' Remake in the Works at Universal
4:36 PM PST 2/7/2013 by Borys Kit

The studio and its Illumination division have hired Peter Candeland to direct and animated version of the Dr. Seuss classic.

The Grinch is coming back to theaters.

Universal and its Illumination Entertainment division are developing an animated version of the Dr. Suess classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Peter Candeland is set to direct, with Illumination CEO Chris Melendandri producing. Audrey Geisel, widow of Dr. Suess author Theodore Geisel, will executive produce.

Grinch was famously adapted in 1966 into a half-hour animated special that continues to air on television during the holiday season. Universal made a live-action film version in 2000 starring Jim Carrey. Despite offending Suess purists, the film grossed $260 million in domestic theaters. That film set in motion a relationship between Universal and the Geisel estate, which collaborated on a Cat in the Hat live-action movie starring Mike Myers ($101 million domestic).

Melendandri also has a history with Suess adaptations. He executive produced Fox's adaptation of Horton Hears a Who, which led to him making Dr. Suess' The Lorax under his Illumination banner at Universal.

Candeland is an up-and-coming director with no major credits. There also is no writer yet attached to the new Grinch movie.
Eh. At least it's animated. Though I still want a stop-motion Cat in the Hat.

....

There's already a much loved cartoon and a live action film.

You're missing the point: $$$$$$

The Ron Howard/Carrey one was very surreal and subversive, panned as it was by some. This is basically a reboot, call it what it is.

Yeah, I like the Carrey Grinch.

The Myers Cat in the Hat is absolutely appalling, though.

I too would rather see Cat in the Hat get some sort of redemption after that Mike Myers disaster..

I'll probably see it, since the Grinch is one of my favorite stories. But it's pretty... redundant.

When the hell are the Hollywood studios gonna come up with something new?

Every new idea is just an old idea tweaked just enough to make it appear different.

Yeah, but they're not even tweaking it. It's just the original story redone, possibly in CGI. Whoopty-freakin'-doo.

If it's going to be a feature film, there's no way it'll just be the original story. It would be 25 minutes long. If that.

The Carrey/Howard Grinch came out when I was in kindergarten, and I watched an rewatched it around the holidays just as much as the cartoon version. I was obsessed with all things Seuss except for the Mike Myer's Cat in the Hat movie. Seriously, **** that movie, and it's creepy Michael Jackson makeup too.

And is this new director's last name really Candeland?

The D is silent. :o

Obviously they didn't learn from the last time. There isn't enough material here for a feature.

Seriously, I don't mind a remake every now and then, because sometimes it actually leads to a film I enjoy more then the original (Oceans 11 for example). But this is ridiculous. We already have an animated film, and a live action film that was pretty popular too. I mean, what else is there to do? The live action film already expanded on the story, is this new cartoon going to expand on it...again? Or are they going to just do a shot for shot Psycho-style remake?

Can't wait for the book based on the CGI remake based on the live-action film based on the 2D animated film based on the book.

Now who do you want to voice the Grinch this time around? Carrey already tried to do the Boris Karloff impression, I'd want to switch up the vocals and make him not as goofy sounding. He still acts goofy as he does in the cartoon, but the voice would be a contrast.

Tom Hardy. In Bane voice.

"Whoville! Take control. Take control of your city."

That's ******, not city.
