Unreal Tournament 3 will come with both Single player and Online Multiplayer.

Aside from the PS3 version looking to be on par with the PC version, the other key thing to know is that the PS3 version of the game will have support for mods and other user-created content, in a way that sounds like it will be a first for consoles. Mods built for the PC version will work on the PS3 version of the game. Right now, Epic is testing this functionality by copying the content onto a memory stick and then copying that to the PS3 hard drive. But they’re hoping to get the PC removed from that equation to make mod and map downloading a part of the PS3 version. To speed up the loading process overall, the game can be completely installed to the PS3 hard drive, but you’ll still need to have the disc in the drive for copy-protection purposes.

To hear Epic describe it, there are only a few differences between the PS3 and PC versions. And aside from the controller differences, the two versions do look quite similar. For one, the game will implement Sixaxis tilt control for steering the hoverboard or piloting the redeemer missile, which is a superweapon that you can steer into targets. Game speed and the size of collision areas are also being adjusted a bit to better tune the game for gamepads.

Overall, the PlayStation 3 version looks impressive, and the idea of mod support just might make it a viable alternative for a series that’s primarily thought of as a PC franchise. It’ll be interesting to see how the two versions stack up when they hit stores this November.

"UT3 is running better today on PS3 than Gears of War on the 360"

Other highlights

-Free mods definitely ("Dude, this is Unreal Tournament of course there will be and of course it's free!")
-Possible cross platform play with PC but it's still up in the air
-Possibility to create levels on the PS3 "eventually"
-The sky's the limit for user created mods/content, entirely new games can be created (de facto for Unreal)
-Sixaxis supposedly works very well for hoverboard control
-Mark/Epic excited about the open nature of PSN and future content
-"Of course we'll release our own add on content for free!"
- "Not to say we'll never charge for anything but come on we're EPIC"

Well Im defiently getting the PC version but this is great news for PS3 players. Im glad with what Epic and Sony are doing. Unfortunetly I dont see the 360 getting some of these features and if so, its going to have to be purchased via microtransactions. Hopefully for them, its not too bad

My punny computer would explode running this game so if I get it I'd get it on the PS3. I hope more PC games take the route of UT2K7 when being put onto consoles.

More news about the features supported:

Folks,

I checked with Steve Polge and he said that YES we are supporting keyboard and mouse in Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3. He is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side. We'll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not.

I think you guys are going to love UT3!

More details to come later.

So in all:

- You will be able to host PS3 servers with the PC/Linux/Mac version of the game.
- The PS3 version will support every pc mod as long as it fits in memory.
- You can filter servers on PS3 based on gamepad, m/k or mixed.
- Home dedicated space as well as the ability to launch the game with a group of friends from Home.

If you don't have a PC powerful enough to run Unreal Tournament III, sounds like the PS3 would be the version to pick up.

I'll never play this, but damn that is a gorgeous game.

What exactly does this mean? Will it be cross-platform in that can PC gamers play against PS3 gamers?

Well they haven't confirmed that Cross play is realized yet, maybe they just mean you can host a PS3 specific dedicated server.

No idea, but the game goes into third person for all the vehicles etc.

Vehicles?? Awesome, count me in.
If this doesn't come out for 360, I'll buy it when I eventually get a Ps3. Unreal is awesome, I used to play the Ps2 version a LOT.

Well it's going to come to the 360 at some point (likely early-ish 08) but you won't have the ability to use a Keyboard and Mouse, play cross platform with the PC and most importantly, use mods. Any mod built on the PC can be used on the PS3 version with no hassle provided it fits into the PS3's 512megs of Ram. So you will be able to download and play any Unreal Tournament 3 mod with the PS3, but not on the 360 version.

At this point if you have a PS3, the PS3 version is for all intents and purposes the version you should be getting if you don't have an obscenely powerful PC.

According to Mark Rein from Epic Games, the PC and PS3 versions of Unreal Tournament 3 will be cross platform enabled.

In addition to this cross platform question, PSU asked Rein if the PS3 would be the only console to support cross platform play for the UTIII title, the answer was that they "seem to believe so."

Now UT III has cross platform play, including mouse and keyboard support thanks to the beautifully crafted FragFx. PSU can't wait to see the mayhem of PS3 players and PC players duking it out this coming November.

Cross platform? Sweet! That seals it for me. This is like unheard of. The only other game I can think of that has that feature is Shadowrun and thats bc it was built for 2 Microsoft platforms and use the same online service. I wonder how the PC/PS3 cross platform play will work out

I dunno maybe you can filter between PC/Console servers. We alrweady know that you'll be able to filter between Keyboard and Mouse only or Controller only servers or mixed.

Wow, Microsoft must have REALLY pissed off Epic with the Gears of War content. I wonder how the Unreal Engine 3 will turn out now that it's being optimized for the Playstation 3 and if Epic will make an exclusive game for the Playstation 3.

Speaking at this year’s Edinburgh Interactive Festival, VP of Epic Games Mark Rein indicated that Unreal Tournament III for the Xbox 360 might have to get cut down in order to cope with the limitations of the console's hardware. Answering a question from the crowd about whether disc size would be a problem with an Xbox 360 port, he stated that “We’ll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version...Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom. And what's really cool is if you think forward and think about what we've done in the past with UT. We had UT 2003 and then we had UT 2004, which was everything in UT 2003 plus a whole bunch of great mod stuff that we went out and purchased from mod makers.”

"If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make."

If the DVD format is already showing its age, it's bad news for Microsoft. Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray has had its detractors, but if multiplatform titles are going to be bigger and better on the PS3, then Sony’s going to be able to start justifying the cost of its more expensive hardware. This will doubly be the case if it's a big franchise like Unreal Tournament from Epic. It's especially worrying given that these are still fairly early days in this console cycle. If it's a problem over the next year, what's it going to be like four or five years down the line?

I was going to say that this loooks similar to Gears of War, but better... Only to remember that this is made by the same company, haha. I might get this, it looks awesome.

Wow, it seems so unusual for a VP to make such a bold claim. The people over at Rockstar didn't have the balls to do this weeks ago. The Microsoft fanboy in me is shocked that this is happening and the Sony fan in me is amazed that all of the crap Sony got over Blu Ray is starting to look unjustified.

Umm....okay

Wow, Microsoft must have REALLY pissed off Epic with the Gears of War content. I wonder how the Unreal Engine 3 will turn out now that it's being optimized for the Playstation 3 and if Epic will make an exclusive game for the Playstation 3.

But anyways, seriously, it seems like Epic has taken a much more pro-Sony route out of nowhere for some reason. It had to be more than just the Microsoft pissed Epic off due to charging extra Gears of War content.

Maybe their having trouble with the DVD9? Ionno. I don't think Epic is pro Sony at all. He had to come clean about what's delaying the 360 version of Unreal. We haven't had any word on it for such a long while.

EPIC said screw you to Microsoft over forcing them to charge users for Gears add on content. Additionally Microsoft was afraid that allowing mods would undermine the monetary system they have in place on Xbox live, they also didn't want EPIC to support keyboard/mouse for the 360 version.

So EPIC bit back, and now they seem to be taking every opportunity they can to figuratively crap on Microsoft in any which way Unreal Tournament III allows them to do it.
