US crime figures: Why the drop?

I personally speculate that crime was reduced greatly in part after 1991 because the fall of the Soviet Union made have reduced a lot of pessimism about the world.

I'm surprised, there's definitely a lot more minorities in the country now.

Its a spurious at best, but the book/documentary Freakanomics portrays a correlation between the falling crime rates with the increase of abortions after Roe v. Wade in 1970's.

Also, wtf does the increase of minorities have to do with it?

By the way I'd like to point out that this drop in crime over the past 20 years has occurred despite the prevalence and realism of violent video games.

I was going to bring that up. :funny:

^ So was I.

Along with how Superfreakanomics relates to the video game option shown. The example they use in the book is how cable TV lowered domestic violence and birth rates in rural areas of India. Same idea different mechanism.

I would agree also with the decrease in the popularity of crack, also simply that there are less young people, or at least a lower percentage of the population is young, than when the boomers were growing up.

^ The first time I ever saw that I thought it was 'shopped for sure.

Ignoring of course the crime of abortion!

:oldrazz:

I wasn't proposing that it was true. Also this index is only measuring certain types of crime. If it included copyright infringement, the rates would be astronomical.

That's true too. Also I wonder if we'll see an up swing in crime due to the underemployment of the generation which was due to enter the working population at the beginning of the recession.

It hasn't happened yet. As that article points out, there's actually been an even steeper drop since 08.

Wow, finally some good news. Refreshing.

So today what I've learned from the hype is that crime has gone down and i don't have to worry about getting mugged and that the world's supplies are going to soon be exhausted and we'll all probably die.

Thanks for the mixed emotions guys -_-

We're all going to die eventually, so might as well get to that mugging.

It's because they finally stopped Mike Vick.
