As they've been doing lately, Syfy had a commercial free sneak peak of the first episode several weeks in advance of the scheduled premier. It's set in 2019 after the world's gone to hell, overrun with vampires. Vanessa (Helsing, according to epguides) is asleep in a bunker being guarded over by a marine with orders to keep her and the doctor safe (except the doctor's been turned). He doesn't know anything else about her. The scheduled start date is September 23rd, 2016.

The only face I recognized was Christopher Heyerdahl (the Swede from Hell on Wheels), whose been making regular appearances in genre shows since I first saw him in Sanctuary back in 2007.

Looks a lot like Walking Dead but with vampires instead.

I saw a 30 sec teaser and didnt like it.

I watched the first two episodes and they are an awful, boring waste of time. Also, titular female character is not in the show all that much, and when she is she is often comatose, and there's nothing compelling about the others and the acting ranges bad to iffy. They also aired the episodes out of order...or they made two different pilot episodes. I don't know what the case is, but I do know I won't be sticking around to see anymore. The show thinks it's AMC's The Walking Dead (a show I also found boring when I tried to watch the begin of years ago), but it's worse overall. The writing is rubbish. I was surprised to see Simon Barry was involved as Vanessa reminded me just a touch of Kiera from Continuum in the second broadcast episode, but this show really doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Continuum.

I give it a 2 out of 10 based on the first two episodes. A very strong DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Watch The Walking Dead if you must (it's not for me), or even the Hugh Jackman/Kate Beckinsale Van Helsing movie - that's time better spent in comparison lol!

I'm still holding on with the show but it's quite poor, 6/7 episodes in and we're still none the wiser in regards to why the show is called Van Helsing.

I'm sure that says it all.

Van Helsing because her great, great, great grandfather was Van Helsing but nothing else about why her lineage is immune to vampirism or where the show is going.

Is this a good show? And if it isn't why is there rumours of a second season?

Not in the intro although there were mentions in the show itself of her ancestry, albeit they were brief and glossed over quickly. The synopsis also makes mention of it.

reimagines the Dracula mythology with the resurrection of Vanessa Helsing, the next in line of a lineage of warriors who now must lead mankind against a world controlled by vampires.

The last two episodes have been better, and the show does make some interesting and bold decisions.

Whittling down the central cast has been a part of that.

I knew finding the real serial killer was not going to be that easy. Kind of surprised at the revelation of who it actually was. It almost seemed like a kind of split personality where one side was innocent but then a switch flips and Dexter comes out.

I thought it was handled well enough in a way. Sam kind of always had this unsettling Vibe about him. Like when he murdered that guy last week, he looked like he enjoyed it.

The actor has done well.

Christopher Heyerdahl is a favorite supporting actor of mine. Going back to when he was Todd the Wraith on SG-A. Then Sanctuary, Supernatural, Caprica, True Blood and a lot of guest appearences since. He's been acting for a long time but I only noticed him after he started recurring on SG-A.

Just finished the first season. Syfy removed it from their On Demand programs for whatever reason. Anyway, thought it was alright. The guy playing Taka has been around a ton, often in the same shows as Christopher Heyerdahl. Also the vampire Rebecca was from Alphas, and Chen (I think his name was) has been in a couple of shows like Continuum and The 100 (I think). I knew the marine would show up again, and I figured he'd be turned. When Vanessa burst in on Rebecca at the end, I could tell someone was behind her and figured it was Vanessa's daughter, but wasn't expecting her to be turned as well.

So finished just in time for S2, which starts tomorrow!

Anyone still watching?

I am enjoying Season 2 more than 1 tbh. My issue with 1 is that it felt like a generic vampire show living off its title rather than actually earning it.

However Season 2 is finally beginning to delve into Vanessa's family history and while it's still moving slowly, the story has become way more interesting.
