Variety confirms new Punisher film, calls it a "rehaul"

As long as you promise not to hit her.

As in the news of this being a R-rating. Thank you! I like many loved Thomas Jane but I'm just about getting ready to get excited with the new Punisher.

I have a lot of faith in Lexi Alexander as a director, I think she is great for a movie like this but I am still a tiny bit worried about the quality of the material and the script. If this stays true to the character and the source material while still being able to tell a good and original story it will be great.

I'll hit anyone who threatens harm on my person a$$hole. That argument is old, and pertains to another website, so get over it Richard.

I really think they could pull off the Vietnam backstory with a limited budget. Why? The movie Dead Presidents ring a bell to anyone?

Anyone remember seeing this film? It has a very intriguing and realistic Vietnam scene (complete with an airstrike) , and was only produced with a budget of 15 million. Im sure the new Punisher movie will have a larger budget then this. I think they can film it in Louisiana for a real cheap budget. Anyone seen this film?

As for Stevenson's age? Well IMDB reported his birthday being in 1964. This man Stanley Tookie Williams (r.i.p) would have been born just around the time to be old enough to fight in Vietnam, as you can see he is still very buff and very formidable.

With the right prosthetics and a decent make up artist Stevenson could be made to look like a man in his 50's or 60's who works out. I know several people pushing old age that could beat the crap out of anyone.

The Vietnam war is integral to Punisher's backstory, this was the war which defines this character.

I also hope she includes the Sheep's meadowCentral Park storyline, and doesnt try too hard to recreate a Garth Ennis story in her own words. I'm hoping for a clever psychological thriller with a dark tone and engaging backstory which doesnt take up too much of the film. Films don't have to begin detailing a long drawn out origin story. This is a recent trend I see today in films that is starting to get old really fast. Simply put, you have to have the protagonist do something cool in the first 10 minutes of the film that will make the audience curious about the pain behind the man. The Punisher is a film (if done right) could lead to several sequels, one of which could detail the many tours Punisher went through in Vietnam.

I hope to god it's not another origin story. for Chrissake this will be the third separate Punisher origin movie, a trilogy of origins! Can we, just this once, even if it IS considered a new franchise, start of with the Punisher as an established character?

I love the Punisher origin as much as the next guy but there certain constraints when making an origin film. I'd rather Frank start the movie already the Punisher and we get right into the action from the start of the movie without having to spend any time focusing on the origin of the character for once.
That should be a boxset :woot:

so no one has seen Dead Presidents?

Eh...the fact that Jane left because, supposedly, the script sucked still makes me VERY weary; not to mention that Jane, to me, is the ONLY man who can play Punisher in this generation. He is to Punisher as Bale is to Batman.

So, unless the footage of this is practically godly, then I probably won't see it. :down

I've seen Dead Presidents. Its an alright movie and Keith David like always is the voice of god.

But I don't want them to spend time on the Vietnam backstory in this film... Or any war they decide to go with. I rather they just jump right into the action that is going on in the now.

I wonder if we'll get the same Punisher emblem from 04. Personally, I'd wish that they keep it. It looks really good.

I agree with that statement. I loved the skull design for the movie. I'm just curious on how this is going to go now. Will it mention the first movie at all or just go into the story. I don't need to see a rehash on how he became the Punisher too. I always hated that about the Batman movies.

I hope they delve into a full on mystery/intriguing crime drama. No more origin stuff, just mindblowing gritty action would satisfy me.

Might I add, I hope Lexi understands the importance of the Punisher symbol.

Anyone under 57 is going to look too young because they *would* be too young. This Punisher is a vet from the Iraq war.

Frank Castle was actually a Marine Soldier in the Vietnam War.

The only way to have Frank be a Vietnam vet without him being in his 60s would be to set the film in the 1970s/ early 80s. Which, now that I think about it, might actually be really cool. Crime in New York was at it's dirtiest around that time, making it a real ugly and dangerous place. To me, that's the perfect time and place for the Punisher to exist. Not to mention, it would make it possible for the film to be a nice throwback to those violent vigilante films of the 70s and 80s.

On another note, one thing that disappoints me about the fact that the film is now a "rehaul" is that Carlo Siliotto's score won't be used again. I think it was one of the best parts of the Thomas Jane film. Touching, powerful, and memorable without sounding like a cliche superhero movie score. The "lone wolf" tone of it fit the character perfectly.

You know, I didn't even think about that. What a shame, I loved that score.

:(

I thought he left because he was tired of waiting around for the production to get going.

personally i cant wait. i loved travolta as a villian so whoever plays the next villian in the new flick better be good

I'd love to see Pitsy somewhere down the line. Robert Loggia would be perfect.

Wow, i'm so glad this movie is happening.

No Travolta (worst villain ever)
No Jane (Did his best but was all wrong)
No Tampa (Thank you God)
No Family Reunion on an island with a witch doctor No T-Shirt that wards off evil spirits (self explanatory)

We are gonna get a movie with a large, grizzled, veteran looking guy as the Punisher. An actor who in his most famous role was a stone cold killer who would bite out someone's tongue and then head butt them.

We are getting Jigsaw, and MICROCHIP! I dont know how any Punisher fan can be NOT excited about this movie on some level. Unless you are one of those who thinks (for some reason I'll never understand) that Jane nailed the role and will forever be the only guy who can be The Punisher (ala Christopher Reeve).

I also dont care about substituting Viet Nam to Iraq, thats just changing with the times. I would just have it be that he was in Iraq and anywhere else where there was a conflict and they needed key targets eliminated. I'm so pumped for this.

I have to agree about Travolta. But I thought the t-shirt was a great touch. It was believable and a perfect way to keep the symbol, without having him wearing some dumb costume.

I'd say keep the t-shirt idea, or just do like the '88 version and forgo the symbol from his outfit completely.
