Anybody pick up the first issue yet? I'll be picking it up in about an hour.

read it this morning...really like how they are trying to turn brock around. Finally someone is giving him the attention and writing he deserves

the cover is superb also

i'll pick it up tomorrow is it just about the origin of venom?

Part 1 is about the childhood/pre-teen/early college days of Eddie and what kind of person Eddie is. No Venom.

I'm really diggin' it so far. Hope it keeps the quality it's at. Adding some nice layers to Eddie's past to make him seem less one-dimensional than he was when he popped out of no where in his first fight with Spidey is a GREAT move.

Yeah, so far its been a good read. Something about someone who
thinks they represent the truth but lies at a moments notice is just sick. I'm sure that as soon as he feels that he's been lied to, he'll feel vengeful, but doesnt realize he has been selling out others to save his own hide for his whole life.
He really is only concerned with #1.

I like how he sets himself up to be the hero. Sounds like Eddie Brock to me.

It also looks like they are incorporating some elements from the Sp3 movie Eddie Brock as well.

Venom: Dark Origin Issue #1 was really great! I'm loving what they are doing to him and adding to him and his overall story. Defenitely the best Venom sotry we've had in a while so far.

yeah it is. First time I actually went out and bought a single issue too. I usually go for trade paperbacks.

And I usually download 1st, maybe buy later. Even when it comes to my A-list choices USM and Thunderbolts (coincidentally, I just bought USM's War of the Symbiotes parts 1 & 2 today, after having downloaded them weeks ago, proving my point) but for the 1st time since 2005, I actually decided to buy the damn comic on day one instead of waiting for a download. Course, I did promise a review, so that also was a (small) factor.

A good start of a promising series. The series portrays Eddie with a sad childhood, and he makes himself better by doing the wrong way. He lies and makes petty crimes to try to make people like him, and he also shows some real dangerous behavior. Those behavior grows more dangerous as he becomes adult.I really enjoy Medina's art in the series. Creepy and fits the tone, especially Eddie's 'it's easy' grin. Zeb Wells is great and I can't wait to see how far will Eddie fall when he meets the Sin Eater the next issue! :sym:

I was actually disappointed with this and I had such high expectations considering Spider-Man/Doc Ock Year One. The eddie stuff was kind of interesting but here's my contention: It's only about brock. Brock as a character alone just doesn't interest the hell out of me. Venom does, but that's because it's two beings in one. Half the charater is left out of this if the symbiote/renegade parasite isn't explored. I mean this was the one alien being in all it's race that turned traitor by not wanting to just kill everyone. I would have preferred to see some early moments from both their existences. They could have shown them doing comparable acts or at least relatable acts (like eddie faking being a hero and the parasite actually being one) up to Peter betraying eddie (in eddie's mind) and the symbiote (actually pete did betray the symbiote) and then the fusion to venom. Well's has done much better, but I'll keep reading and hope it turns around.

See, adding depth to Brock is what makes this series interesting to me. The symbiote has always been the star, so to speak. Its been given so many powers and back story that it really doesnt even make sense anymore. Meanwhile, Eddie might as well have just been the suit that the alien was wearing. Thats how little attention he got.

Yes, Venom is two beings. But its time to shine some light on the human half. I'm sure we'll get much more of the symbiote as the series goes on.

While I agree with you a bit, the rogue parasite's thoughts and feelings are rarely if ever explored. It's powers and limitations are brought into stark contrast, but why it's the only member of its race that wanted to help rather than hurt others has never been touched, nor the idea that it's in fact an emotional infant and also the first of it's race to ever feel emotions at all. First love, then betrayal. I just thought a side by side as to their developing characters would have made this so much better. Also Eddie doesn't have too much unique in him. He's a one note wonder by himself. For villianous motivations he's nothing, and personality wise (when he's not playing the I will kill the spider card) there's not much there and compared to the rich emotional layers of so many of Pete's other sparing partners he's really pretty simplistic and one dimensional. I know the point was to show there is depth here, but without the parasite (the more interesting character in my mind [think it's speech in issue 4 of reign]) this should just be called eddie brock: dark origins.

Whats the speech in Reign? I never read that.

issue 4, and I'm spoiling it so stop reading if you don't want to know....

it turns out the symbiote (with no host) is the one behind all the chaos. Pete confronts it and the symbiote rips pete a new one on how everything bad venom's ever done was his fault. I don't have the novel with me now (though it's prominently displayed on my bookshelf) but to paraphrase:

Pete: So this is about me?
Symbiote: You? Of course it's about you, it's always been about you hasn't it? Why should I be any different? Why should you consider what I've been through? Here I was imprisoned by my own race for wanting to help life rather than kill and then you come along and rescue me. You teach me emotions, you teach me love, and then when you discover I'm not just some costume you try and kill me. You repay my love with pain and hate. You taught me to hate. I'm the one responsiblity you've always shirked. I've got others of my kind now, they're all here. I've told them how you feel inside, how special and unique you are. They all want a taste......

Something towards that effect. He's got a couple other really good ones, especially with JJJ. If you've never read it, check it out. A lot of people hate it because of the MJ thing and the idea that a being around a man full of radiation might not always have super consequences, and the news stuff is very much reminist of DKR, but the charaterizations from Pete, to sandman, to sandman's daughter (I cried at that part), along with the awesome characterizations of venom, JJJ and Ock combined with kick ass art should be enough for most.

I thought back to the first Web issue, when pete fights the suit (though the suit wasn't trying to hurt him) then goes to the church bells but passes out and the symbiote's first conscious solitary act is to fight through the pain pete cause it and pull him away to save his life even though it doesn't know why. I don't care what anyone says, there's worlds of character and story in that act alone that's never been remotely touched. That said I'm gonna keep buying cause Wells is a hell of a writer and he might turn this around even to the point of me looking very stupid in my criticisms, and I hope that's the case.

Personally, the reason I don't like Reign is because of the godawful art. I like the story just fine.

The only thing I actually liked about Venom was his backstory. When he became a generic brain-eating villain, he lost all the appeal for me.

I liked the story, but I didn't like that he had a run-in with Spidey. I would have preferred that they're first encounter be when Eddie was a reporter at the Bugle. I also wish they would've played up his religion a little more. But overall, I liked it.

I personally dont like the mainstream Venom. I prefer Ultimate and Movie Eddie/Venom, One of those should get a mini series

ok I don't mean this to sound mean, but for the movie mention you're officially voted off the internet.

In his defense, movie Venom had more impact in 15 minutes of screentime than 616 Venom had in 20 years of comics. At least movie Venom killed Harry. 616 Venom killed a Guard...and folded Aunt May's laundry.

Honestly, I hope that this story is great. I hope to pick it up this weekend.

I wonder what happens when we get to the part where he confronts Peter's wife?
