I don't get it. I'm a big fan of McFarlene Brock/Venom. But other than that, what makes anyone think a film dedicated to Venom is going to be any good.

Seriously, IMHO, other than McFarlene, Venom was always pretty hollow in the comics, TAS of the 90's was better, but he was still somewhat of a dumbass, and well, we've seen SM3. In other words, Venom has never really been done right, what make anyone think it will be done right this time.

I just don't trust it.... who is he going to battle, what is the story about, floating from host-to-host, and is he going to be this anti-hero... that ruin him in the comics in the first place, imo. I don't know guys.

Not necessarily...all it would require is a good rewrite of the Eddie Brock/Venom character.

What's the point in using Venom then if you're going to change the character? Further proof he's just not suited for his own movie if you have to totally rewrite him.

And an origin for the symbiote that could be homage to The Thing/At The Mountains of Madness.

The symbiote already got an origin in SM-3.

If this movie is sans Raimi and sans Blowpher, it has a chance. As other have suggested, it also needs to be R-rated especially if Carnage is the antagonist.

Topher was a complete and utter failure. He doesn't have the physical presence to be intimidating. He has no ability to convey any emotions without seeming campy. I'll agree that Venom should be written better but you simply can't make a tasty Ceasar salad out of a steaming pile of animal dung. SM3 showed us that.

If you look at this from a linear "good Venom vs. Carnage" route that most look at it from, it'll be a movie where the character isn't dark enough and an opportunity goes wasted. If you look at it from a non-linear standpoint and consider other possibilities, it doesn't have to be such a waste of celluloid.

Let's say you set up a character...Gargan, or someone else...who comes across the symbiote. The symbiote has traits from its last host and is desperate to find Peter and kill him, but if you rush a film like this and do that you might as well do this in a Spider-Man film. You can spend time showing this take on the symbiote lulling over the host with all of its positive points, tempting the character with the power it offers. Then things go down the horror alley. The host could be forced to commit all sorts of heinous acts; maybe you could introduce Carnage and have Venom kill him against the host's wishes. Make some outside drama and create an ending where the symbiote is finally destroyed, and you have a standalone film that can be the Venom film fans have wanted. You don't have to go about it like that, but I'm just a fan thinking of a practical story. You could definitely do better.

And by the way, Joker/Doc Ock: if they made a solo Doc Ock film, would you watch it?

Call me old fashioned but I think that an actor should actually look like the character he/she is portraying. I have yet to meet a person who has answered "yes" when I ask them if John Goodman would make a good Spiderman despite his lengthy and celebrated career. By that same logic why should a mammoth, ferocious, awe-inspiring villian be played by a emaciated, B-movie reject like Blowpher?

I don't think this film should be considered dommed jsut yet. I really think this film could be an amazing film. Look at it tihs way, Wolverine is a spin off, Magneto is a spin off, those films could fail, but do we know for sure? no. The same thing should be said about this film. Also, even though Venom doesn't have as much background as some other Villians, it doesn't mean they can't work into that and add things to him. I have alot of confidence for this film and quite frankly, I'm really excited for it.

I hope this is Marvel's way of counteracting the bungling of the character in SM3. If that's their intention, then I will get excited.

There is a big difference. Carnage is a slice-and-stab kind of fighter. Venom is the kind of fighter who keeps coming even when he's absorbed enormous amounts of punishment. We aren't talking bloody noses and black eyes here. Unless the studio goes with a different kind of blood ( ala AVP ) this movie must be R-rated for the necessary brutality of the characters.
