The studio is in final negotiations to pick up Verona, the fair city which is the setting of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a spec by Neil Widener and Gavin James that retells that tale.

Joe Roth is attached to produce. The deal was made in a competitive situation by Hannah Minghella, who will oversee for the studio with Matt Milam.

Exact details are being kept more clandestine than a love affair between two teens from opposing Italian families, but the script is said to reimagine the classic love story through a lens of an epic, 300-style world. 300 was the gritty and fantastical Zack Snyder movie that adapted the Frank Miller comic book miniseries that retold a battle between Greeks vs. Persians in a stylized and heightened reality.

Roth, who once called Sony his home when he ran Revolution Studios, is in post on Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to the billion dollar grossing Disney movie, and is in preproduction on The Huntsman, the sequel to Universal's 2012 retelling of the Snow White fairy tale.

The writers are repped by CAA, Grandview, and attorney Greg Slewett.

I have a theory that William would have loved things like Star Trek, Saturday Night Live and WWE wrestling.

It seems about right. In the Romeo and Juliet setting, the two families would basically draw swords and attack each other on sight, it seems to be a good way to adapt a 300 movie.

For me nothing will ever beat the 1968 version, but I'll be interested to see how this turns out!

"Romeo oh Romeo, WHERE ARE THOU OH ROMEO, RAWRRR!!!!"

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is still my favourite movie version of the story.

I think he would love soap operas.

Shakespeare liked lowbrow entertainment as much as the next guy.

Didn't we get this with that Kate Beckinsale vampire werewolf movie a few years back?

WWE is basically Shakespeare. Honestly, watch an episode of it.

Shakespeare made blockbusters, just like Spielberg and Nolan.

The re-evaluation of Shakespeare as the patron saint of literature cane after his death.

I thought of the exact same gag about an hour before you posted this but didn't bother to write it.

It's sort of the most obvious joke that could made pertaining to this. Don't worry someone else posted it first on every other message board lol.

Jason Statham will reprise his role as Tybalt once again after Gnomeo and Juliet.

Seriously this absolutely stinks like Rothman.

Wherefore art thou, Romeo?
THIS IS VERONAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

This has train wreck goodness written all over this. :D I guess people couldn't get enough of reimagining of the play after the version with Leo. :o
