I've been thinking. Why is hardcore sex rated XXX or NC-17, while hardcore violence is rated R. What would a decapitation be the equivalent of? A shooting? Would you rather children emulate an extremely violent movie or a sexually based one? Why does our culture view sex as a worse thing than violence?
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

I think that the censors feel that in the real world, hardcore violence is much harder to replicate than hardcore sex.

eh..... I've seen things that only the likes of Ana Kurnikova can replicate :O

What's worse, some kids going columbine at school, or a couple trying something new?

Now, I'm not blaming movies for violence, I'm saying that if emulation is the MPAAs reason for censoring then they are inconsistent.

I think thats why too. It would have to be hard for a 5 year old to get grenades and AK-47s and shoot them at their friends. With sex all you need is one friend.

i guess sex is one form of control religions still have over us, they've kinda let go of the whole violence thing and let that be but they can still show their influence in the sex department.

in all honesty it probably goes back to something that simple a long long time ago...

America was largely founded by Puritans and other hardcore religious groups who had some extremely repressed ideas about human sexuality. They passed those values on from generation to generation and here we are, where it's okay to see people being beheaded in a PG-13 movie but it's not okay to see people having naked sex. Ridiculous.

Exactly and considering that "burning the witch" was aking to a folk fest for those puritans the question about the glorification of violence answers itself.

because Americans have a fear of sexuality caused by outdated gender stereotypes where to be a real man, you have to kick the ass of anyone who crosses you, but to be a real woman you must be pure.

A famous German Author once said in reference to the hymen " It completely escapes me that one can call something the honor of a woman that is at best 10 cm away from the *******."

Well, the first half is true

Part of this that is not being addressed is the what has always been considered the proper place for sex and violence to be seen.

Even if someone doesn't have notions of sexual things being immoral, etc., it's still thought of as something to be done in private. Whereas, with violence, it is often in the open: wars, etc.

Violence's place has always been in the public eye, sex has not. So it is naturally going to be preferable to many to see it in mass media.

full on hardcore sex should be x rated. that's not something a child can comprehend fully. plus, it probably looks just as weird and scary to a 7 year old as a decapitation in a movie.

now, nudity is a different story. nudity outside of sex is fine pg or pg-13 movies. there's nothing wrong with the human body, and i don't understand people that are afraid of it.

Yeah, I don't know why parents are so afraid of their kids seeing breasts. It's not like it's going to warp them.

Try to refute this celldog.

We live in a backwards world where an act that brings pleasure and creates life is taboo, while acts that bring pain and death are a different story. People get up in arms about sex education in schools, but those same people smack their children in public places from very young ages and claim it is their right as parents to do so.

Sounds valid.
