The thread is simple. This is the five Oscar winners for the years 2005-2009. Select the winners in each category, and at the end of the month I will count the votes to see who is selected the best out of ‘’the best.’’

Note: PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR FAVORITES! Vote logically and honest.

BEST PICTURE
Crash (2005)
The Departed (2006)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
The Hurt Locker (2009)

I find both Crash and The Hurt Locker to be really poor movies, but find The Departed and No Country to be great. But Slumdog was both directing/writing and creatively the best movie of those 5.

LEAD ACTOR
Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) (2005)
Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) (2006)
Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) (2007)
Sean Penn (Milk) (2008)
Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) (2009)

Hoffman, Whitaker and Penn gave amazing performances, but Daniel Day-Lewis is a god.

LEAD ACTRESS
Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) (2005)
Helen Mirren (The Queen) (2006)
Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) (2007)
Kate Winslet (The Reader) (2008)
Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) (2009)

Great performances all (Bullock is an exception) but Marion was truly transformed. She was spectacular.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
George Clooney (Syriana) (2005)
Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) (2006)
Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) (2007)
Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) (2008)
Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) (2009)

Wow, what a set of amazing performances. Bardem made a full on transformation performance that was beyond amazing. Waltz was brilliant…until I saw him in other movies, and until I find out that he played himself. Ledger has made the ultimate transformation performance. Vision, voice, movements, ticks. He was perfect.
Clooney and Arkin were good, but they did not deserve to win those years.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner) (2005)
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) (2006)
Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) (2007)
Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) (2008)
Mo’Nique (Precious) (2009)

All are good performances but Mo’Nique was so amazing that standard performances like the ones by Swinton and Weisz just got blown away.

BEST DIRECTOR
Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) (2005)
Martin Scorsese (The Departed) (2006)
Ethan Coen, Joel Coen (No Country for Old Men) (2007)
Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) (2008)
Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) (2009)

I’m kid of a big homophobe and yet Brokeback was one of my favorite movies that year. Why? Well the acting and directing were top class.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Crash (2005)
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Juno (2007)
Milk (2008)
The Hurt Locker (2009)

Original, funny and inspirational. That is my opinion of Little Miss Sunshine. Crash was a peace of **** (same as The Hurt Locker). Juno was good, but to boring, and Milk was great (my second choice) but yet standard bio pic.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
The Departed (2006)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Precious (2009)

Brilliantly written. That’s my opinion of Slumdog millionaire. Original approach for adaptation, and great and complex storytelling.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
There Will Be Blood (2007)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Avatar (2009)

So, F-ing hard. Avatar had amazing and complex cinematography and yet Pan’s Labyrinth had some of the best camera movements and lighting I have ever seen. And I’m studying Cinematography so this is a big category for me. There Will Be Blood also had great cinematography, same for Slumdog, but I just have to go with Pan. It just was perfect in both movement and lighting.

ART DIRECTION
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Avatar (2009)

Pan. Sweeney Todd and Benjamin Button had brilliant art direction, and yet everything compared to Avatar is nothing. Avatar is on a whole new level.

COSTUME DESIGN
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Marie Antoinette (2006)
Elizabeth: the Golden Age (2007)
The Duchess (2008)
The Young Victoria (2009)

Just liked the costumes best in Elizabeth. But all were great.

SOUND MIXING
King Kong (2005)
Dreamgirls (2006)
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
The Hurt Locker (2009)

Almost went with Slumdog, but the mixing in King Kong was great. The entire sound division was great.

SOUND EDITING
King Kong (2005)
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
The Dark Knight (2008)
The Hurt Locker (2009)

Great sound editing. Kong deserve that award more than anyone.

FILM EDITING
Crash (2005)
The Departed (2006)
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
The Hurt Locker (2009)

Most of these films were edited to perfection (not including The Hurt Locker), but Slumdog had PERFECT film editing. I mean, when I saw it for the first time the first think in my mind was how great the editing was.

MAKEUP
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
La Vie en Rose (2007)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Star Trek (2009)

Probably the hardest category to predict. Benjamin Button had THE BEST old age makeup ever. And yet Pan’s Labyrinth had some of THE BEST creature makeup ever. I’m going with Pan on two reasons. Button dependent on CGI, Pan did not, and Button had 150 millions to work with, Pan had 19 millions.

ORIGINAL SCORE
Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain) (2005)
Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel) (2006)
Dario Marianelli (Atonement) (2007)
A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) (2008)
Michael Ciacchino (Up) (2009)

Atonement score was probably one of the best scores of the past 10 years. Pure and total brilliance.

VISUAL EFFECTS
King Kong (2005)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Man’s Chest (2006)
The Golden Compass (2007)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Avatar (2009)

Not to vote for movies like Kong, Pirates and Button is a crime, but Avatar was just the perfection of visual effects.

ORIGINAL SONG
‘’It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp’’ (Hustle & Flow) (2005)
‘’I Need to Wake Up’’ (An Inconvenient Truth) (2006)
‘’Falling Slowly’’ (Once) (2007)
‘’Jai Ho’’ (Slumdog Millionaire) (2008)
‘’The Weary Kind’’ (Crazy Heart) (2009)

I listened to all of those five songs before I voted, and I still think The Weary Kind was the best one of them.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Ware-Rabbit (2005)
Happy Feet (2006)
Ratatouille (2007)
Wall-E (2008)
Up (2009)

Wallace and Gromit was too boring, Happy Feet was just not that great, Ratatouille was very good, but not wining good. Up is one of the most overrated animations for the past years. It was good but apart from that one emotional scene in the beginning, the film was too uninteresting. Wall-E was just perfect.

Oh boy, here goes...
