Want "The Spectacular Spider-Man" Season Three? Watch Season Two On Disney XD!

thanks Dread,
it is always a pleasure to read your insightful posts

Thanks.

this may be a blessing in disguise. this will now push spidey into late 2009/early 2010, 2010 is where spider-man 4 will start ramping up with all the excitement that goes with that. sonly may see it as a no brainer to pick up season 3 and ride on the coat tails of SM4 so they both come out in 2011.

Yes, that is the upside to the delay. The dilemma is if certain writers, assorted staff, or actors get tied up in other projects and are unable to return. That said, voice actors are usually used to being on several projects at once and running about, so that may not be a problem.

In fact, I may not be surprised if Sony was deliberately stalling things until 2010 so it could trump up more demand for Spidey projects and likely justify more funding. They're a company and have to justify all expenses to boards and whatnot. Approving a third season in 2009 with the economy the way it is may not seem as viable as in 2010 when the movie is in production and someone can say, "Look, a third season of this could be produced faster and cheaper than starting from the ground up for a third time since we got the rights to Spider-Man".

Nice post, Dread!

Gives some insight. Hope you're right and eventually we will get a Season 3. After all, 26 episodes is a little over a normal season, so you would think they would probably want at least 26 more to rotate in reruns.

Indeed. The magic episode number for syndication is usually 52-65 episodes; for a 13 episode per season format, that comes to 4-5 seasons. WB usually stuck exclusively to the "65" episode number, even for shows that were in theory still popular, like TEEN TITANS. The fact that Disney budged on more KIM POSSIBLE after Season 3 ended with 65 episodes in 2005 actually showed some reason. Modern animation is expensive so it usually needs to pay for itself quickly or be assured that it will over time.

Still, Marvel cartoons have been returning to a 26 episode seasonal format for other stations that weren't Kid's WB. FANTASTIC FOUR: WGH that was worked out for Cartoon Network got 26 episodes, even if CN lost interest in it. W&TXM got 26 episodes. That could also be a source of delay; increasing the budget and justifying it, as well as haggling over stuff, for another 26 episodes rather than 13. Of course I'd be happy with another 13 if that was all we could get. I wouldn't be surprised if 2010 was chosen as the year to "synergize" efforts for Spidey on the big and small screen, and the show was in production limbo until then.

In terms of DVD sales, The-Numbers.com hasn't listed one SS-M disc in it's Top 40 sales listings for weeks of release. That isn't to say the DVD's aren't selling; BEST BUYS always orders many copies. Just that the sales are not blockbuster.

Well hopefully if they are just waiting hopefully they will order 26 episodes so they can start off the bat working on both a 3rd season and then 4th.

just watched the entire season 1 and 2 again and it really takes the breath away just how good this series was, we're talking Justice league/BTAS good. c'mon sony see sense, you've just signed a 3 picture deal with the screen writer for the spider-man movies make it a one-two punch with a season 3 spider-man annoucement.

brings a tear to the eye we may never see greg's take on;
the scorpion
the jackal
the death of the stacies
peter hooking up with mj
morbius
6 armed spidey
man wolf

I'd take a single 'farewell' episode if that's all we could get, like 'epilogue' in JLU.

I hope sony look at the SSM dvd sales and compare it to other saturday morning cartoon dvd sales rather than ALL dvd sales. I think it would hold up well with the former but not the latter.
I know people like the conveince of bit torrent and youtube but I wish this once they would put their hands in their pockets and splash out for ONE dvd to ensure a 3rd season.

Don't forget The Hobgoblin!

Sony would be nuts not to order a third season.

And Disney would be too.

However, I'm not getting worried. Well, at least not yet.

Yea we have nothing to really worry about untill greg says something of not coming back or we get the good news of new episodes commisoned.

wonder if season 3 will now happen on disney XD seeing as disney now own spidey (although sony own the right to make the cartoon/movie).

well i think its a good chance now thata 3rd season will happen with the whole new disney/marvel thing that happened today. As for what this means for marvel comics, and future films after current film deals with other companies go out i dont know. Hopefully disney will just invest money and get a list people on projects and help lesser known characters get out their on the big or little screen and not force things in creatively.

the fact is sony own cartoon rights for spidey so in that respect not a lot has changed but disney may add sweetners to the deal (because they want to increase the marvel global brand). here's hoping.

well this certainly answers the question why disney wanted spider-man on their channel in the first place.

Let's hope this will effect this show for the best.
I also hope Disney to invest and return the X-men film franchise.

yea hopefully we will soon get news for a 3rd season order up now with disney and marvel together.

I don't see how there won't be more seasons now. I think a lot of the Disney purchase has to do with the fact that most of the shows on Disney right now are aimed at girls.

While I think this is good for SSM I am worried about it as a whole. The thing that excited besides what it will do for this show is the possibility of pixar animated marvel movies. That sounds bad ass.

I just hope Disney is in it for profit and leaves Marvel to Marvel.

I may be too optimistic, and I may be jumping the gun, but I think with Disney buying Marvel it's a safe bet that Spectacular Spider Man will be renewed for a third season.

it would be very silly if they didnt renew it now and the show has done well for dxd, and pretty much the only way disney can make some dough off of spiderman since film rights are tied up with sony still for the foreseeable future.

I'm still pissed that this show may not get a 3rd season. Why does this have to happen? I mean, this show is loved dearly by so many of us fans and children.

That was one of my first thoughts when I heard the news. Now with Disney likely getting a bigger cut of Marvel's pie, they easily have the capital to fund a third season of the show if Sony has cold feet. Honestly, if they had no faith in the show, they wouldn't save new episodes for sweeps month; they'd burn through the show quick and forget about it completely, like MTV did with their Spidey show.

I hope they decide to continue with Spectacular and not decide to reboot with a new series.

I know man it would be stupid not to continue a good running show, and not bother to make a whole new one.

Hey guys i was just wondering has any one tried to contact greg W or any other guys from the show to see their thought about the marvel/disney deal and what this could mean for more seasons of SSM.

Hey guys! Heard the Disney/Marvel news today. I do really think that it bodes really well for our beloved show! Disney now has a chance to screen the adventures of Marvel's flagship character for the next few years. I don’t think they would be that foolish to pass it up!

by the way IGN has a nice article entitled "

The Disney/Marvel Deal: What It Means for TV"
