I just picked up a couple of the War Games graphic novels from my local library and, having read them, can't help wonder whether they are supposed to be canon versions of The Dark Knight Returns.
The initial similarity was obviously a female Robin, then the actual gang war in Gotham reminded me of DKR.
All the gangs follow one man for control, and Batman and his team become outlaw-types towards the end.
The main differences are that it's Black Mask and not the Joker, Superman doesn't show up, and it's set in the present.
Is is meant to be a remake set in continuity with the other stories?
Has anyone else thought this?
