Warner Bros. Pictures and Team Downey are relaunching the "Perry Mason" franchise as a feature film, with Robert Downey Jr. eyeing the title role, reports Variety.

The trade says that, like the original Erle Stanley Gardner books, the Perry Mason movie will be set in the 1930s and feature characters such as Mason's secretary, Della Street, private investigator Paul Drake, and Mason's longtime courtroom nemesis, Hamilton Burger.

Team Downey's Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey will produce with Robert Cort, while David Gambino, Eric Hetzel and Joe Horacek will executive produce with Susan Feiles and Chris Darling.

The producers are currently looking for a writer, whose script will be based on an original story by Robert Downey Jr. and Gambino.

I've seen all the Raymond Burr TV movies of Perry Mason, but I don't know how or if they differ from the books besides being set in the (then) present day.

i guess this means I won't ever have to go anywhere or do anything ever agian.

This looks interesting.I've seen some old episodes of Perry Mason and I'll be going to this movie when it gets made.

Hollywoodize Perry Mason Sherlock Holmes-style? If so, at least don't use the same actor that makes it so obvious.

RDJ is officially the King of Franchises. :D Iron Man, Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and now this.

I would rather see Downey do that Steve McQueen scripted treasure hunting movie.

RDJ just wants an excuse to start getting fat.

RDJ is switching one stereotype (playboy superhero as IM) for another one (detective superhero as Holmes and Mason). Who's next for him, Philip Marlowe? Kojak? Matlock?

Random thought: I hope they go with Ozzy's version of the theme music. They *must* go with Ozzy's version of the theme music.

RDJ would be better as Paul Drake.

i never read the books or seen the old tv show. But i know of the character. curious to see what they do with the character.

Hell, after the Kirk Lazurus thing, give him Charlie Chan.

I've never read a Perry Mason book or watched a single whole tv episode or movie, but that tv theme song is stuck solidly in my head right now... :p

It seems like RDJ wants to be typecast as a detective or something.

I love the sound of this. Especially in a 1930's setting.

Hey nothing wrong with being typecast as that if he enjoys the work and films are successful.
