Was a successful Dragonball franchise ever possible?

AMBITION.

Even a chick flick from Japan has more daring fight scenes than this dreck. I kid you not.

i truly believe if you got the right people behind a project - any project - it can be good.

I still think Dragonball is pretty much unfilmable.

It can definitely be done. Its just that in this case Dragonball (the original material) had everything going against it.

Uninspired choice of director and casting, 30 million dollar budget (revealed by James Marsters recently he also mentioned how the studio got him into this production under the idea that it was a $100 mil movie, so the 50 mil reporting was another lie), 20th Century Fox, crap script written by Ben Ramsey, and rushed so they wouldn't lose the filming rights.

Upon many, many other idiotic mistakes made.

In the hands of a competent studio its still possible. Will it happen? Unlikely as Fox still has the rights and this property is a toxic waste zone after DB:E.

I'm tempted to agree....you could probably do the original DB as a high concept kids movie with a young Goku and Emperor Pilaf and all that...but DBZ, no I don't see that working

Dragonball is not worth spending $100 million IMHO.

Ha...... If done by a competent studio it would deserve more than 100 mill IMHO. This franchise could have been what Spider Man and Xmen did to comic book films.

Same here. Maybe if DBE had been in more competent hands it could have been decent, but it would still have hardly resembled the original manga/anime. A faithful Dragonball just plain wouldn't work in live action without being laughably stupid.

FOX lied to Masters that it will be a 100 million movie? they can do this in hollywood?

there are ways around it.....if you look at a movies total budget...its not just the money that goes into film production, its marketing, advertising, merchandise

The real budget was 30 million? Why would they trick them that badly? Chatwin thought the budget was 120 million!

eh I don't really buy any of it.

I don't even believe the actors either.

I'm sure with some creative HOLLYWOOD ACCOUNTING, Fox can say DBE was only $30 million and write it off and as miniscule loss.

Greddy ****ers now they have the rights for another 5-10 years :csad:

I hate how that happens with film rights. They should sell something if they aren't going to use it.
