It’s almost hard to believe such a statement, when it sounds so backwards. Researchers and economists have come out with some interesting correlations, stats and figures that will make you go “hmmm”.
Before we dive into the new research that states watching violence and porn can reduce real crime, let’s take a look at laboratory experiments stating the opposite. The basic conclusion of most laboratory experiments is that watching violent images and video, will in fact cause parts of your brain that suppress aggressive behaviors to become less active.

watching your avvy almost makes me want to rape somebody

well this makes a lot of sense to me, considering I'm a violent movie/t1tty junkie, and I'm like one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet

exposing children to sex as a natural part of life takes away all the stupid taboos off of it, it looses its "forbidden" charm

I'm willing to place bets on how long it takes Moviefundie to show up in this thread.

Any word on whether these researchers either read or watched A Clockwork Orange prior to conducting the study?

I honestly don't doubt it for a second.

The study..not the clockwork orange thing.

Although exposing your kids to decent sexual education will take away the stupid taboos and uptightness about it, porn will just create a warped perspective of sexuality.

I don't fully believe in this catharsis theory, I just think there are certain individuals with accumulated life experiences that predisposes them towards rape and violence. Regardless to their exposure to porn and violent movies.

Even though I watch both porn and violent movies, I'd have to say they have a negative effect on society. Violent movies desensitize you and might make you indifferent to the suffering of others. Porn like I said above, distorts your perception of sex and women and sort of take the magic out of getting your first girlfriend naked.

agreed.

Ted Bundy. One of the most notorious serial killers in history. Luckily, he was very open with what motivated him. Therefore, his views and opinions could give us excellent insight. Let's see what he had to say about the issue:

I, however, believe this issue is extremely complex. Everyone reacts to violence in porn in their own ways. However, there is a general trend.

Makes sense. However, if I have a machete in my hands while watching something like, I dunno, the next Rambo, I might be tempted to do some damage.

The bastard is blinking too much, think thats a sign of lying, then again his whole life was a lie.

I heard (no source) that he was being interviewed by Christian lobbyist after he'd apparently found God, which lots of people do before the death sentence or when they want a reduced sentence, and he was corroborating a view they wanted to promote.

In any case, is it any surprise most inmates are heavily involved in pornography, apart from those who rape guys or start being gay in a utilitarian fashion, all they have is porn.

Plus implying porn leads to rape is right up there with saying pot leads to heroin.
Although rapist surely watched porn, and smackheads surely smoked dope, one doesn't cause the other.

Like I said, the issue is more complex than a simple correlation. Other variables come into play as well; Such as how the individual is raised, his/her relationship with his/her parents, his/her love life, his/her social life, his/her relationship with his/her boss and his/her landlord, etc... All that said, there is no question in my mind that violence and sex in the media does stimulate certain individuals into performing dangerous thing.

Someone told me it may not push people to murder, but makes the murderers more creative... If you can call it that.

The study is saying that violence in our media and porn as seperate subjects could reduce real-world violence and rape. Bundy is specifically talking about violent pornography in particular being the catalyst for his actions, so I don't see how his comments apply to both subjects. Violent pornography is a specific branch of pornography, and it's not something you're going to find many cable TV stations airing for the general public.

Bundy was known to lie about pretty much everything and was definitely considered a sociopath and likely a psychopath. He's not really a good foundation to build a case on that porn and violent movies lead to worse things from individuals. Frankly, some people are just broken and defective regardless of what they are exposed to. Violence and porn probably don't help those people normalize whatsoever, but if it wasn't that then it would be something else that they'd key in on to justify their deviant and harmful actions. The majority of the populace isn't really effected or lead to do terrible things by porn or violence, IMHO, though it may desensitize them to some of it as you have said. It may also inspire them to try something more than the old missionary position, too, though, and lead to a more fulfilling sex life and that ain't a bad thing. ;)

porn and violence affects people in different ways...

some people fill less urgency to fulfill such acts and use it as a form of relief...

others simply get very excited by what they see and hear and wish to emulate it.

younger viewers would tend to wish to emulate but meh...

So the natural conclusion is that there should be more porn with violence. Violent porn. YES!!

I've signed you up to star in a gay snuff film. You won't get a chance at a sequel, so make your performance good!

Wouldn't violent porn just reaffirm the desires of the kind of people who would be aroused by violent porn? The violent urgings that sexual criminals have is usually rooted in some other experience than just watching a video.

It may also satiate their desires enough that they don't feel the need to act out on them, though.

True, but a guy who wants a Caribbean vacation can watch all the movies about the Bahamas he wants. That doesn't mean dreams of going there will vanish.
