Im finally reading this..and its just like everyone said. Its one of the best works you could ever read, really. When ever i take time out to read it,i often think about it afterword. It is a must read, there is no doubt. The eerie thing is...plenty of the themes from the comic could easily happen in real life...

i would say so, i mean its such a real and groundbreaking novel. watchmen made superheroes real, i have read it about 4 times and its always so hard to put down once u start reading it....i hope the movie doesnt suck.

The movie will never come out. So your hope is well grounded in reality.

I just started reading it for the first time, too. Only about 15 pages in or so, but I can tell it's gonna be a great one.

Aristotle is full of crap. The gears are slowly turning for a Watchmen movie. While it may not be out for several years, it will get made eventually.

And if it helps whet your appetite, it will be directed by the same guy that brought us 300. Also in a preview for 300 there is a subliminal Watchmen frame thrown in. I think the frame in question was circulating Newsrama.

I did not enjoy Watchmen.I get burned for this alot, but I know I am not the only one.I read this for the sole reason that it's regarded as the "best comic ever" among fanboys.Word of advice for noobs, buy and read TPBs and stories with characters that interest YOU.

I didn't think it "sucked balls",it's just a story that didn't appeal to me when it was all said and done. This and DKR get tossed around as the "greatest TPBs of all time".I completely understand how both stories revolutionized and paved new pathways for the medium, but story wise I found Watchmen rather dull and depressing.

I like Watchmen but I had to read it a few times to get everything that was going on. I still haven't read DKR yet...

I am someone who can't watch, or has real trouble watching, shows like Law and Order Special Victums Unit because of the harsh subject matter.

I want to read Watchmen but I don't know if I could take it,
How harsh does it get?

It has dead dogs, attempted rape and 'some' murders.

DKR is pretty good too, but its really a pro-Batman story (obviously ;)). personally though, nothing has come close to the level of The Watchmen, maybe with the exception of Kingdom Come, and that got a good boost because of the visuals.

can you imagine The Watchmen done by Alex Ross? :hyper:

I think that'd be horrid actually. Dave Gibbons had the perfect style and was capable of creating an atmosphere that Ross simply can't. I like his work, but it would've seriously hurt Watchmen if art had been done by Ross. It'd be a beautiful art piece, but would be detrimental to the story.

Try, for a moment, to imagine Kingdom Come's art with the Watchmen plot. The two do not mesh... at all. Ross' style is epic, and meant to draw you in by its grandiosity and vibrancy. Gibbons' style is subdued, realistic and perfectly suited to the story.

ross can still do the job. he can change his style to fit the mood of the book. see MARVELS.

Was Marvels any less of an epic story? With the exception of the mutants chapter, the entirety of Marvels was big, grandiose colours and larger than life characters meshed in with the real world. Watchmen is dirty, grim and depressing. Even Ross' work on the aforementioned mutants chapter wasn't able to evoke that kind of feeling.

Why are we even discussing this, at all?

it's nothing so bad as that, at least not as compared to some really graphic comics like Preacher. I actually enjoy SVU, but I would say most episodes are much worse than Watchman, which briefly speaks of rape, but not in any excruciating detail

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Moore's, and not of Watchmen. I just find it dense and dry. I think maybe if I'd been reading alot of comics in 1986, I might have been impressed, but as there were lots of books like Kingdom Come, Sandman, Transmet, JTHM, etc. etc., as I was a teen I wasn't starved for any intellectual comics and so it didn't really stand out for me.

i agree. i absolutely love ross' work, but he woulda been all wrong for watchmen. watchmen deconstructs the comic book genre in every way. one of the ways that was achieved was the look of the art. gibbons' work is very comic booky in a traditional way, which is augmented even more by the bright flat colors. while ross is a phenominal artist, his art isnt necessarily what you think of when you think "comic book". gibbons was the perfect choice.

I just got this last week, so far I havent gotten very far in it, since I also picked up Kingdom Come, and Batman: Year One in addition, to watchmen. From what I've read though its good.

I'm also reading it right now and it's pretty good...thou I'm still at the beginning

heres a watchmen piece alex ross did. it works fine as a one off pin-up, in fact its great, but certainly wouldnt work for the entire book...
