In Watchmen, one of the most chilling moments comes from a flashback scene depicting the attempted rape of Minutemen member Silk Spectre by her teammate, The Comedian.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays The Comedian, confirmed in a recent interview that director Zack Snyder went to great trouble to ensure the scene in the film was true to its comic counterpart.
It was a three-day process shooting that particular scene, and it was hard. It was three of the hardest days of filming I have ever had to do. It was really very violent.
The rape scene is one of those moments in the comic series that really sets it apart from standard comic fare, and, according to Morgan, the cringe-worthyness it leaves you with in the comic makes its way into the scene in the film as well.
When you’re looking at the comic book you only get a couple panels so there is a lot of stuff there that needs to be filled in, so we fill in the blanks there between three and four panels, and it turns out to be one hell of a violent scene.
http://www.watchmencomicmovie.com/images/hj-rape.jpg But the one thing that has many fans jacked up is that Snyder decided to have Hooded Justice be the one to break up the act instead of Nite Owl I — which is how it was altered in previous Watchmen screenplays.
And it’s all intact, [Hooded Justice] comes in and interrupts the attempted rape — it’s all there. We stayed very loyal to it, and I haven’t actually seen the scene yet, but I did see a piece of playback when we were filming it and it’s a lot.
So does Morgan think that general audiences are ready to see one super hero try to rape another super hero on the big screen?
I know certainly the fans of the novel are [ready] and now it’s a matter of reaching an audience that isn’t familiar with the novel. I think Zack is the guy who is going to stay true to the novel and be able to reach a main stream audience as well. If they are ready for it? I don’t know, we will see. It’s rated ‘R’ for a reason.
Back in July during, San Diego's Comic-Con, I had a chance to interview Carla Gugino, who plays Silk Spectre I in the film. She also discussed how disturbing and violent the rape scene ended up being.
…the rape was so brutal, and Zack said, “Are you gonna be okay with the fact that I want this to be really brutal? It's not sexy, it's awful.” And I said yes, because it has to be that, that's intrinsic to the nature [of it].

well this is the book that broke boundaries for "superhero stuff"
so these kinda things were needed for the story

Yea this is far from the typical "super-heroes" actually they are the anti super heroes. They truly reflect how they would "truly" be in this world. I've never seen them as such. Its not a super hero movie by far. It truly is a movie on morality, politics, and so much more, I've written countless papers about what Watchmen is about. It has satire on the idea of super heroes, sure, but they are far from the typical ones. Which making the rape scene, shows more of human condition, integrated with men in costumes. *excluding Jon*

Hope the rape scene isn't the highlight of the film... this is like the third thread we had on it...

Yeah I want this scene in this movie, this is where the movie loses its innocence and i hope its quick and brutal. The last thing i want is a Zack Snyder slow motion rape scene. That would just be too much.

Wasn't Hooded Justice the one that breaks it up in the Book? Why would fans be upset about this?

In the previous Scripts, it was Night Owl I that interruped the Comedian, so, everyone was expecting that to happen on the movie, but Snyder kept Hooded Justice as the one who stops Black, which surprised the fans.

All you dudes taking your chick as a "date movie", I doubt you will get any ass after the flick.

I'm taking my "chick" "as a Watchmen movie". She read it after I did since I kept talking about it. SHe's not as obsessed with it as I am, but she liked it.

Read it again. It was HJ in the book, it was changed to Nite Owl in previous drafts of the script, but Snyder changed it back to HJ for the movie.

Also, fans being "jacked up" is a good thing. It means fans are excited about the change, not upset.

This is one of those scenes where it just seapates it from your average film. I tell this to people that watchmen will not be your typical comic book film. They ask why and I just say, "You'll have to see for yourself." You need to be the judge of somthing like this. Everyone viewsit a different way. If Snyder does it right, and I think he will, we will be uncomfortable, people who were thinking this was gonna be fun will now think twice and squirm in there seats. The GA could see the seen as needless or make them have a respect for the film.

Blake shooting the pregnant woman is also an indication.

I couldnt resist :hehe:

Neat. Thanks for the clarification--

As if people who obsess over Watchmen get any ass at all. The reason nerdboys are soo fixated on the squid is because they spend most of their sad little lives watching Hentai tenticle rape porn

Its definitely an awkward moment for me in the story. I dont know why but Ive always felt uncomfortable with it. I guess Im kind of sensitive towards that subject matter.

dont talk about yourself like that...soon you'll get a girl and experience all the wonders(and terrors) of a relationship...maybe some day you'll have sex...it'll happen...but we're not all in the same boat as you :cwink:

stop feeding the trolls!!

The other version (where Nite Owl stops Blake) might have been a move on the writers part to avoid going into the more unsettling details surrounding HJ. The rape scene was disturbing not only for what Blake was doing, but in what Blake hinted at about the "first" costumed avenger, Hooded Justice.
