We need lower budget, R rated comicbook movies.

The problem is that Snyder took, too literally, a source material whose greatest strength is its depth and metaphorical meaning. He then took his own liberties with parts where YOU CAN'T take liberties because they're completely out of character.
Exactly. Snyder was not cut out for the material.

Define "better".

Don't start me off on how wrong Rorschach planting a cleaver in dude's head is, in terms of his character...

Better in the sense that it could appeal more to the general audience. The general audience is pretty weird. The Cold War means nothing although it was somewhat recent enough that you could easily talk to people who were around during it, but dudes with spears and sandals from a long ass time ago in history is seen as badass.

If Snyder is going to adapt another comic property straight from the pages, he should pick something that has more mainstream appeal like 300.

He should stick to stuff like 300 because that's what he's suited for, pretty much mindless action. When it comes to character and story-driven narratives he's lost.

for the exception of Watchmen, no other project he has worked on could be considered "heady" so I do not agree with your statement...I think he is, but perhaps he likes action movies, much like Michael Bay

not every filmmaker is out to change the world and provide a life changing narrative

I am just judging from Watchmen yes, but there was considerable drama in 300 and I think he fumbled with a lot of that (not all of it, mind you). I definitely think he's better than Michael Bay though, that guy doesn't like action movies, he only likes making money. Action movies are just the best venue for him to make money. :o

True, but I think the film version of Watchmen could have been that (at least as much as the book was) if it was in the right hands.

eh, I was never a fan of it being adapted in the first place....you always lose a lot in translation from page to screen

Bay likes to have fun along with the making of the money, that seems to be his mantra in every interview Ive ever seen the guy do

since when was it wrong to want to make money??

Studios need to realize not every comic book movie should be 150 million plus summer blockbusters. They need to change up their superhero movie making formula.

Some lower budget comicbook movies with a winter season release date would add variety. This will also give filmmakers more control over their products.

Discuss.

I think low-budget superhero movies could be great in the hands of a good director. The thing you run into is that most superhero movies are unimaginative studio-controlled mega-blockbusters. But not every franchise needs excessive CGI. I'd love to see Deadpool or The Spirit done with a 30 million dollar budget with a talented director.
