I love the fact that movies like these can't prove themselves any more because a few "movies like these" have given comedies "like these" a bad rep and now audiences can't even tell the difference any more between a movie with potential and a movie with potential to stink.
Let me tell you, this movie doesn't stink and I just saw this movie, here's what I have to say:
1/ 09/ 2008
-People like to jump on this "Another Black Comedy With An All Black Cast" bandwagon, yet they are the same people that are quick to recite quotes from Chappelle's Show or Boondocks like there's a defining difference and sometime's..there is. With this movie, it's not. It's actually pretty funny. What I liked and what you will like in this movie, is how there's actually decent COMEDY writing in this movie.
-Now, Malcolm D. Lee makes, decent, wholesome, quality movies. A lot of people haven't taken the time to acknowledge this about the film, but this guy has made very decent and recommendable movies like Roll Bounce, The Best Man, and Undercover Brother. Therefore, if you enjoy comedy and slapstick along the lines of those movies and comedy stylings reminiscent of "Martin" and "Chappelle's Show", you WILL enjoy this movie.
-The film has some heart, or at least attempts to bring about a message, which is clearly all about not letting money change you or make you forget where you came from, but other than that, the movie's plot isn't too original and features some cliches and some predictable twists, but with all those things, I'm still recommending this movie because the movie is well cast and "fires on all cylinders" as a comedy.
-What makes the comedic moments in this movie work is the directing and the actors. When you watch this movie, you'll be able to tell that this movie was written and directed by people that know what's funny, when the actors can be themselves, and what can be funny for EVERYONE. EVERYONE (especially the fans of the shows that I've mentioned before) will understand and enjoy the jokes in this movie. If not that, then I recommend this movie JUST to see all of these great comedians and dramatic actors (especially Michael Clarke Duncan, who is actually very good at comedy here, but MOST especially Mike Epps, who pretty much steals every scene he's in) blend together especially in some of these over-the-top slapstick moments that work well without becoming too distracting and out-of-taste.
-7/10 ("Matinee" - Definitely worth your $6 (plus $10 for popcorn) for the early shows.
TNC's Bottom Line: If you liked the material of "Meet the Parents", the "Friday" movies, "Undercover Brother", and "Chappelle's Show", you'll definitely like this movie.
