I thought it would be interesting to make this poll and see who votes what.

For me, they are learning experiences, as well as entertainment.

So, besides entertainment, what are movies for you?

I am in too the cheap bubblegum and popcorn thrills as well as the emotional experiences – memories of good times, bad times, etc.

I like everything

There is nothing that doesn't work for me

I guess my input might be valuable here.

I'm an "anything goes" sort of guy in regard to films. There are scholars who believe there's only one way for movies to be good, and I just don't buy that.

I like whatever engages me and makes me care for the characters on screen before it's all done. Not much more to it than that.

Beyond that though, I view film as a chance to view the impossible. Just as H.G. Wells dreamed of rocket ships that are today a reality.

Catharsis & Escape.

Both could fit under the category, "entertain" though since the "escape" factor is due to the entertaining value of a film.

But, to me those two words just sum everything up: Catharsis & Escape.

Hard to say.

I have guilty pleasures. Rambo, Deep Impact, Twister...

I also have legitimate critically-recognized pieces of work I like to watch, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, etc.

Then I have movies I grew up on that I like to watch sometimes for sentimental reasons, like Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, etc.

I also like war/historical movies, not so that I can take those movies as definite be-all end-all representations of those events, but so that I become interested in them and do research to learn more about them. Saving Private Ryan kindled my interest in WW2, for example.

Movies are 'Cinematic Adventures.' :D

If you go about genres, i like anything, as long as it is good.

As a description of what´s cinema is in my opinion...
Well, cinema is entertainment, that´s a given, no one goes to the movies with the expectation of being bored to death.
But movies are also a learning experience, both on culture things and feelings.
One goes to the movie, not only to be taken to other worlds and places, but to taken of a emotional ride, where you put yourself in the characters shoes.

Now, if i am to tell you what kind of movies i love the most, what kind of movie i see myself doing, i see myself making movies, no matter what the genre, but one that dwell heavily on emotions, because only by caring you will feel for the characters and what is going on.
I always look at movies as to, what would happen if that was true, what would be on the characters mind and heart if they went thought something like that...
No matter how weird the story might be, i always try to give the emotion of what he going on in the heart and mind of the girl, when she is finds herself away from everything she knows, in a strange world, surrounded by alien creatures (just an example).

I like popcorn movies as much as the next guy, there are some amazing ones, that i can´t imagine me making them.

Depends if I have been drinking ....

I tend to go see a movie on a Saturday night after a few beers, I remember getting emotional during Deep Blue Sea!!

I could really chose all of your options.
I think I get a little too into a movie,so yeah,it's a super emotional experience. It can certainly be a learning experience as well, like how to kill a man. I can sit and enjoy campy, tongue and cheek films too. I don't always go for cultural,racial/religious movies unless I hear really good things that make me want to see them.

Learning experiences, I'm working on becoming a cinematographer and every movie I see I always look at the way it was edited and the way the camera is position the way the scenes setup and the way the director has directed the actors.

Movies are learning and emotional experiences for me. I look at movies in different ways than other people there just for the entertainment. I really learn alot from movies.

There are sexual reasons behind why people like movies too.

Who can forget Leia's golden bikini for instance?

I must admit the first time I saw a boobie was in some horror film. good times.

Movies are an escape from a harsh reality where you emerse yourself into a fantasy reality for at least 1hr & 30 +mins.

Movies is just one medium to tell story and story is art, and Art is merely a more creative form of philosophy or more approriately the question of what is life? Whether it be Borat or Raging Bull :)

All of the above. Some movies are simply for escapism for me yet there are others that challenge or re-enforce my ideas and beliefs.

Some movies speak for me in ways I could never express myself.

Movies can speak to my very soul. Validating my existance with messages of resistance, discovery, and redemption.

But most of time the best thing a movie can offer is a few good geekasm moments. I live for those. :woot::supes:

I too go with all of the above. I watch a wide variety of films, and they affect me in a variety of ways. I look at film as God's gift of letting me escape from the trappings of reality.
