Few of us are all about only one franchise that appeals to the Fanboy/Fangirl community. If you like Star Trek you probably were into Star Wars. Like Spider-Man? You probably have some familiarity with Batman too. Big fan of Moorecock? Then you have probably read some Howard's Conan.

However... There are also those things that just sort of pass you by for whatever reason. It's not that you think they are bad or anything, it's just they don't get your juices flowing. Sometimes they can be HUGE properties with world wide acclaim and a mess of fans but for whatever reason don't resonate with you. So... What are the things in the world of the genre fan that just don't resonate with you that perhaps would surprise others to hear about?

For myself... One big one is the POTTER series of films and books. Hugely popular and by now a big part of many in their 20's childhood, but when they hit they had their fair share of adult fans as well. And... Meh. I read the first two books and watched the movies based on them given the visibility they had at the time but... They were okay, well done, all that, but... They just didn't grab me.

Anime for me. Someone tried to get me into it in college by showing me Akira, and I still for the life of me have no idea what that was supposed to be at all. I've never been more "WTF??" while watching a film. I've enjoyed a couple Miyazaki films just fine, but they didn't blow me away or rank at the top of my list of favorite animated films or anything. I appreciate the imagination involved with these things but the actual stories and characters don't engage me at all.

I could never get into Doctor Who. I respect it, I have no ill feelings toward it, it just isn't my cup of tea.

I had tried to get into it when I was young through a friend who was crazy about it. He watched it a lot but as a young kid it didn't do anything for me. Oddly I started once Tennant became the Doctor and have been a regular viewer since, and enjoy the lore but for most of my life, yeah, I too was in that category.

I dabble in a lot of stuff old man so really not sure.

I am sure you do... But this is about fanboy passions not your overwhelming drug addictions. ;)

Real talk, you can't think of any property that people talk about that they expect you to be into but you have no clue about?

I guess if you look at it that way probably Star Trek as i haven't a clue about any of them even though I've seen all the movies and the old tv show with Kirk.

Harry Potter for me, I've seen all the films but I was never 100% won over by them. I once thought it was because I was too old for the series, I think I was about 17 when the first one came out, but a lot of people I knew both my age and older really loved it also. I just put it down to not really being into wizards and magic that much. That said, I've recently found a new appreciation for it as I was doing research for a Potter related art piece I was working on, so I may end up becoming a bit of a late bloomer.

I think almost everything unless you're strictly a fan of one genre/franchise, you'll have a blind spot.

Star Wars. I'm sure I could kick anyone's ass here on Star Wars knowledge. But I haven't read every EU book.

Harry Potter. Watched all the movies, didn't read the books.

Batman. Watched all the movies, BTAS, but not all of the Batman animated movies and other shows. I've probably only read his more popular storylines/books.

Same thing with most other comic stuff, Superman, Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.

Dr. Who. I only started watching since Matt Smith became the Doctor.

Star Trek. Watched only the movies, and probably a few dozen TNG episodes.

Star Wars and Star Trek. I like scifi, I have liked a lot of what I've seen in those franchises (really enjoyed watching Force Awakens, for example), but something just doesn't click with me and SW/ST to the same extent it has with so many people.

Star Trek, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Anime.

I've dabbled in all. Got advice from hardcore fans for a "starter pack" in each. None of those things really hold my attention though. I see why people like them. I certainly don't look down on anyone who does.

And of course I have my own blindspots even for the things I do like. I think everyone does.

Star Wars
Doctor Who
Terry Pratchett
Anime
Tim Burton films

Some more properties I just couldn't get into are the DC shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Gotham, etc.).

I watched the first season of Gotham and I just started liking it less and less with each episode, so I quit.

I would have given the CW shared universe shows more of a chance if they tied them into the films. I'm not saying I'll never watch them, but as of right now I have more than enough shows on my plate as it is.

I love fantasy, and not the kind that pretends magic doesn't exist. My favorite authors are Moorcock, Howard, Glen Cook, and Steven Erikson. Yet the following series never resonated with me:

Dragonlance Chronicles
The Rift War
The Belgariad
Brandon Sanderson's works
Earthsea

I like Anne McAffrey's pern series, but that might be more in the realm of SF.

I have always had a problem getting into any fantasy books. The few I have been able to get into usually have either movies to follow, LOTR, or tv adaptations, GoT, with few others that gained my interest. If it's pure Fantasy without anything resembling technology of a sort beyond blacksmithing swords then I have trouble bothering with it. Hell I got bored once and tried to figure out how GoT would work if someone invented hang gliders and grenades for the Reach. :p

I also have trouble getting into any tv shows since I don't watch tv. That means any bug critically acclaimed shows tend to just not appear on my radar for years. Breaking bad was done for a few years before I watched it. GoT was finished its fourth season. I've never seen Gotham or Supergirl. When I talk to my mother she constantly goes on about these actors since she's a tv fanatic and I have to keep reminding her I don't watch tv and despite her telling me I must know these actors she talks about, I really have no clue.

Edit: Seems Vic and I are on opposite sides of the spectrum. :p

I hear ya. One of my favorite scenes from Erkison's stuff was when some marines used their munitions to make a field shotgun, with which they smoked an angry Dragon. :D

Marvel - I like their Netflix offerings more than their theatrical ones, Iron Man 3 being the exception.

DC - I don't really care for any of their television offerings.

Anime is definitely one for me. I still enjoy DBZ but for the most part I don't care for it. Not a fan of the majority of its animation style or its tropes.

Bronies

Transformer live action films - I would rather watch the cartoon film than the Bay ones.

Cosplay - Not my thing.

Green Lantern

Ms Marvel - I checked out her book and don't get the hype.

Hannibal - Started off ok but the more it went on the more I disliked it.

Olicity

Any YA fiction that involves a love triangle

Transformers and G.I. Joe I suppose. I like some of the cartoons from the 2000's and 2010's but the 80s and 90s cartoons don't do anything for me and the movies range from decent to terrible.

My resume lacks in a few heavy hitter fandoms.

I've seen the Harry Potter films but I don't love them. I never read the books.

Doctor Who is another. I've wanted to jump in it halfway through Tennant's run but never did. The current doctor already had a series or two so it's too far for me to jump in it.

I don't do any of the teen/young adult novels. Catching Fire Part 1 was so disappointed, I didn't watch the sequel. I never got into The Maze Runner or Divergent.

BV you are too old school to have to hand in your card for anything. You were there when Cap had a see through shield. Guys like you made the "hip nerd" thing possible. :cwink:

LOTR... I don't know why, but it doesn't excite me.

Same. I mean, as I got older I got the themes and all and I enjoyed most things in the films, but you know what? I think I have seen the movies all of... gosh, I saw them in the theater and that's it. Never felt the need to go back.

Which is odd since it's a rich mythology with insane back stories to get into and explore and that usually gets my juices flowing but... Meh. Again, not saying they are bad just not for me, apparently.
