Hello all. Now that most of us have seen The Avengers, I wanted to open a discussion about the future.
So, we know that Joss said the next movie would be smaller and more personal. However, we also know that Thanos is going to be involved in some way. So given this, I thought of a few possible scenarios.
*I thought it unlikely that Thanos would directly confront The Avengers in TA2, simply because Joss said the second movie would be smaller and more personal. I find it hard to imagine the second movie being smaller if Thanos is the main big bad. So I see him being a more behind the scenes man in TA2 and coming out in full force in TA3.
1.) Secret Invasion. Thanos masterminds the skrulls to infiltrate Earth. The movieverse could either treat the skrulls as a separate entity from the chitari, or maybe Thanos experimented on them to give them more abilities. This could be built up over the next batch of solo films, introducing characters that we find out are skrulls by TA2.
2.) Red Skull. We know old Red is out there somewhere. Possibly Thanos gets a hold of him and gives him the means to go after our favorite Captain, and thus the Avengers. Thanos possibly send the Red Skull as the leader of this Skrull secret invasion if we want to combine this option and option 1.
2.) Civil war. This could play out a few ways. First, we could have the next batch of solo films lead up to a civil war in TA2. We already saw the government is clearly uncomfortable with superheroes at the end of The Avengers, and their subsequent solo missions leads to a meta-human registration act in TA2.
Second, we combine secret invasion and civil war. Secret invasion is phase 1 of civil war, with the disguised skrulls both posing as meta's that act out to lead to the registration act, and politicians pushing the act. This could possibly be expanded into Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. Civil war is A2, and we find out in A3 that the skrulls/Thanos were behind it.
Now, I do think that Civil War would be even more epic on screen if Disney ever got the rights to other Marvel universe superheroes (especially spidey and x-men) though I can't see that happening soon. Possibly X-men within the next decade, but unless TASM bombs, I doubt sony is going to easily give up a character that made them 2.5bill in the previous decade. (Though is their option up after 6 films? Or do they retain the rights as long as they keep making films?)
