It's 3:47 in the morning, I have to wake up at 7:15, and my roommates are *******s with terrible tastes in music. So, needless to say, I am in the market for some sleeping pills.

What all do I need to know?

*edit:* Great, I spelt "know" wrong.

They make you sleepy. Dude, I wouldn't start to depend on medicine of any kind other than for colds, being sick, etc. You use it once to fall asleep, you might want to do it again. Heard some people actually do get addicted that way. That's my two cents. Google sleeping pill addiction before you step into it. Prescription? Can be really heavy whatever it is and whatever reason you're using it. Been there, done that, never again.

I've heard about pill addiction and have looked stuff up, but I've always learned more from personal accounts that full studies.

What did you go through with them?

I take sleeping pills... Have been for the past couple years. For me, the Unisom type generic soft gel sleeping pills work best. I take a couple, eat, and within an hour I start to feel drowsy.

EDIT: I get the generic kind because in my experience they're equally effective as the name brand product yet a few dollars cheaper.

I was going to post a pic of Heath Ledger, but I realized that wouldn't be that funny (and would probably earn me a fatwa on my head from the Batman fanboys).

Personally, I'm not into sleeping-pills or anything that makes me drowsy. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. Into adderall, coffee, red bull, anything that stimulates me and keeps me going. Sleeping pills, to be honest, also scare me a bit.

Kinda really personal question, I'll try to answer without delving into it. I thought the medication I used (similarly over the counter) would help with a serious problem I was having. Depression. It did for a while. Then I became addicted. The usual deal you see in movies. I even got cold turkey once. It was a scary time in my life dude. College aged too, not that long ago. Sometimes over the counter can be just as bad as everything else out there. I've heard sleeping pills work the same way. It's risky.

I stay far away from all energy drinks and beverages with caffeine in them. I have a hard enough time sleeping as is, the last thing I need is anything that will boost me into over-drive.

So pills are a bad idea, eh? Okay, post some sleep aid stuff that actually works.

With the set up I put in the original post, what do you suggest I do?

It depends. You could just be having insomnia and have to tough it out. If it's your roommate making so much noise? Crash at a friends' pad. I don't know what sleeping aids there are if you mean substances - just casual "every day" ways around it.

Exercise. Go jogging at night. Wear yourself out.

And dude, man up, and tell your roommate to knock that crap off and have some consideration for you. He sounds like a complete ass, playing his music at 4am.

Pills aren't necessarily a bad idea... It all depends on the person.

Ear plugs. Or put on some headphones and play some white noise.

Then meditate on something that relaxes you and you should pass out.

This is my routine exactly. I've taken generic Unisom pills for years. I've asked multiple doctors about it and they've all said it's fine. One asked if I wanted a stronger prescription sleeping pill, but I declined-- the Target brand softgels put me to sleep easily and I'm not groggy the next day. I'd rather not have to take pills to sleep, but I'd rather take the pill and sleep well than be restless all night and tired the next day.

Kill your roommates, then get some real sleep so you will have enough strength to get rid of their bodies. Pills would be just covering up the problem, you have to get to the root of the problem and solve it for good.

Don't really know much about them other than the fact that they can get addictive.

Sorry I can't help, but I will say this, falling asleep naturally is the best way, not chemically.

Tell your friends off, move somewhere else if you can... and as a last resort... if NOTHING else can be done about it, use some sleeping pills.

Weed. I'm serious. Yeah yeah, illegal, but still. It's the only thing that helps me sleep. Sleeping Pills scare me. I'm not in control.

In cases where I really can't sleep, I take a Tylenol PM or 2 (but usually 1) and never felt any type of addictive behavior forming. That said, I VERY RARELY will take them. Maybe about a handful of times a year.

I know they've been the cause of early demise of many a celebrity.

Sounds to me like you need to have a word with your roommate about playing music at 4am. That's only common courtesy to cut that crap out. You needn't take sleeping pills because of him (or her) being a wanker.

Melotonin, It's made by your body, sooo....

What do I know about sleeping pills? Take 'em until you imagine spiders crawling up and down your arm, and then take some more.
