He was always a pretty basic villain to me, but he's a favorite around the fanbase for some reason.

He's a fantastic character and easily one of his best and a lot of people may say he IS Spidey's greatest Villain. He was the first Villain to actually defeat Spider-Man, create the Sinister Six, was the Master Planner, almost married Aunt May, killed Captain Stacy, etc. Currently, he has cancer and his big return was in ASM issue 600.

And by the way, One of his best stories is Return of The Sinister Six. It shows off how much ock doesn't care for others opinions and he pretty much buries Sandman with words. If you're looking to read about his origin, I'd suggest Spider-Man: Unlimited #3 as well as Doc Ock Year One.

He's my second favorite Spider-Man VIllain. My #1 favorite is The Green Goblin.

He grew up parallel with Peter, bullied and smarter than his peers. Yet, Otto let the bulling fester within him and became bitter towards his agressors, specifically his Dad, and was happy when he passed away. He loved his mother growing up but slowly began to despise her for the poor image she gave him growing up. We all know that the accident gave him powers, much like Peter, but decided to use it for his own selfish purposes. He badly beat Spider-man during their first fight, by slapping him and humiliatingly throwing him out the window. Spider-Man almost gave up being Spider-man because of this loss! During the rest of ASM, he gathered the Sinister Six together, became the Master Planner, almost married Aunt May, and almost killed Black Cat. However, he was killed at the hands of Kane, where he was revived, somehow. Plus, he is smart, cunning, cruel and powerful (thanks to the extra arms) He can even control his arms from a distant, connected to them or not, and rarely uses his own limbs, because he is THAT badass. And THAT is why Doc Ock is one of Spidey's BEST enemies and why he has such a fan base.

These are good answers. Most of it is relatively obscure information, but you guys have read way more Spider-Man comics than I have (did read Ock's first appearance, though).

I can better understand why he appeals to you even though he doesn't to me personally.

Otto Octavius is the true arch-enemy of Spider-Man. Say what you will about the Goblin, in my mind he's a pretender to the throne.
So why Ock?
Well, his powers are just...cool. Super strong, super durable mechanical tentacles? Sign me up!
Ock's also got a strong will, and he's pure evil. This is a guy who once tried to blow up New York City with a neutron bomb to prove a point.
He also gave The Hulk the most humiliating beat-down/ass kicking of his life, without breaking a sweat.

My question would be: What does everyone see in The Green Goblin?

Marvel pulled him out of nowhere to put an end to the Clone Saga and ever since he's become a blatant clone (pun intended) of Lex Luthor. His own storyline has become so convoluted it's practically impossible to follow.

Green Goblin appeals to me because of his bizarre and freaky double life.

In the 90's animated series he's a stern but overall normal businessman that gets in over his head, and in "Amazing Friends" Norman is a good guy that suffers from multiple personalities.

In others, Norman is a cold, calculating sociopath. You would expect him to frown deeply on anyone who went around acting like the Green Goblin, because that person is so unrefined. But that's who his alter ego is: a cackling, hyperactive lunatic.

The transformation he undergoes to become GG is jarring.

The Green Goblins' legacy is unmatchable in the marvel universe, IMO. He's tormented SPidey (even after norman was killed) for years. He found out his secret identity , He killed Gwen (Peter was going to marry her), and then he got killed by his glider. The Ggoblin legacy continued with Harry getting inolved with LSD, and things like that. Peter came home one day and actually thought Harry wasn't hom, but he was. Peter was in the shower while harry sneekily opening up the drawer and found the Spidey costume. He whent after SPidey, but in the end, he was taken to a mental insititution. He even told the people taking him in that peter Parker was Spider-Man,, but everybody thought he was crazy. Nobody believed him of course because they thought he was crazy. Harry also claimed he was THE only true Green Goblin. To make a long story short, Harry's psychiatrist bart hamilton became the Green Goblin AND he fought Harry while Harry was wearing the Goblin costume as well. Harry eventually married Liz, had a baby, which lead up to his tragic but epic death in SPectacular Spide-rMan issue 200. Shortly before Harry's death, there's a great scene in the comics where Harry wearing the Goblin costume (except the mask) forces everybody such as Liz, his son, Molten man, and Spide-rMan to have dinner. He has these...sad but creepy outbursts to the point where he's drooling. In the end, he saves Sppidey form an explosion and dies wholding Spider-Man's hand.

And trust me, that's definitely NOT the end of the Goblin saga and I skipped over a lot of things with that write up such as Norman having amnesia after Spider-Man breaks the ropes he was tied up in free and they get into a fight right bfore an explosion happens, etc. Also I skipped over a lot of the stuff in The SPectacular SPider-Man stories inolving Harry as well as Harry fighting the Jason Macendale version of the Hobgoblin, but if you want to know more, just message me.

As for Norman these days, he's so sneeky and unpredictable. it's awesome!

Here are soem great shots of Harry in the Spectacular Spider-Man run. Fantastic artwork by Sal Buscema and it really hleped with the emotions of the characters.

I always thought that if Venom was the dark mirror of Spider-Man, Dr. Octopus is the dark mirror of Peter. Basically if Pete used his intelligence to bring everyone else down and elevate himself in the process. I always liked the weird mentor type angle they kind of played in the second movie, and in the 90's show when he was actually Peter's teacher at science camp

For me, he's got an interesting look, cool powers and has a big place in Spider-man's history. That's what keeps me liking the character.

Mole Man also almost married Aunt May.
Are you speaking of the comic strip? I don't count that

Ock is great as a master planner, a genius with no super powers and cool tentacles and smarts (Batman fanatics always brag about Batman not having superpowers, why shouldn't we about Ock)
He's also great when he aids Spider-Man in fights and missions

Eeeeeehhhh........ I'd count his tentacles as superpowers. Especially given that they're fused to him after the accident. You could argue either way, admittedly, but that's the way I see it.
