What happened to movie vampires ?

Remember when vampires use to be bad ass killers ? Remember Nosferatu, Hammer films Dracula, Salem's Lot, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, and From Dusk til Dawn ? At exactly what point did vampires go from being satanic bloodsuckers, to whiny, emo *****es ?

I could jump on the bandwagon here, but I haven't read the books or seen the first movie. IMO, vamps can be emo whiny or bad ass. We can have both for all I care.

Funny, because what you said is kind of true.

The vampires demise came when Hollywood started treating vampires like superman. I thought the first Blade movie was great, and even before that, I thought Interview with a Vampire was good, but it seems in every movie since, vampires can do pretty much anything. Super strength, super speed, super vision and hearing. It's becoming kind of annoying. What happened to just a blood sucking, night prowling immortal? That felt creepier to me.
And I know Bram Stoker's original conception could do all manner of stuff, but I can forgive the Lord of Vampires having those abilites, not all of them. Somebody needs to make vampires creepy again.

There is so much in literary & film vampires, it's easy to ignore something if you don't like it. And there are all kinds of vampires. From Lord Ruthven to David to Lestat to Count Orlock to Dracula to Valek to Jesse Hooker to Jerry Dandrige to Sally "The Shark" Macelli.

Anne Rice had something to do with it. Most of the crappy emo versions are poor ripoffs of her concepts.

Vampires are interpreted in so many different ways in this day & age, just because you don't like another persons interpretation of vampires doesn't mean that is entirely wrong.

Movies like Twilight focus more on the romantic aspect of vampires instead of the monsterous blood sucking aspect of vampires which sucks for the males who like the blood & gore but that is how female writers view vampires.

Really. I didn't watch much of True Blood, but that looks lightyears ahead of the 'romance' from Twilight.
