What If What If..? Season 1 Episode 2: "What If...T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?"

Ha, I was just about to make this thread.

This episode was very bittersweet. Even though I think we're still due another T'Challa Star Lord appearance later in the season, hearing Chadwick's voice and seeing the tribute at the end were a bit sombering. But the story of the episode itself was very entertaining, as well as an improvement over the first, and I liked the Captain Carter episode. This one really played around with the concept. Whereas in the Captain Carter episode everyone was still more or less the same as they were in TFA, this one had good Thanos, honorable Yondu, femme fatale Nebula, etc.

The voice acting was great across the board, particularly Boseman and Karen Gillan. Josh Brolin was great as Good Guy Thanos too. Djimon Hounsou was also having way too much fun as fanboy Korath.

I also thought that the character animation looked a bit better here, especially for the alien characters like Thanos and Drax. Speaking of Drax, I did find it funny that Bautista wasn't asked to reprise the role for a cameo, yet Kurt Russell was there for one line at the end.

I'm going to watch the first and second episode tomorrow, so far i've heard good things about them.

I liked the Captain Carter episode a little more but I liked how they showed T'Challa's effect on Yondu and the rest of the Ravagers and I thought the voice acting was much better here as well. Save for maybe Del Toro.

I'm not surprised they didn't ask Bautista to come back considering how small Drax's role was here and I thought whoever did the voice work for him, did a really good job anyway.

Overall another well done episode. Looking forward to next week!

This episode was a lot better. They didn't just make a 2 hour movie 30 mins, they made a 30 min adventure. This was fun. I liked it quite a bit.

I would have enjoyed a sequel, but would they do one to this with Chadwick gone? Regardless, long love the King of Wakanda!

I'm glad they at least touched on the fact that Peter not being picked up by Yondu means he was free to get taken by Ego which, as Uatu said, pretty much means the end of the world/universe.

Also, I wonder if the weapons in the Collectors arsenal mean that world has no Avengers.

My favorite What-Ifs are when they do drastic changes.

Though it may not be a story solely around him, Star Lord T'Challa will be back this season. In one of the trailers,
he's seen with Gamora, Thor, and a different Black Panther. Maybe they all team up to stop Ego?

Copied from the general discussion thread:

Ep 1 was a solid if rushed pilot and re-telling of The First Avenger, with focus on the changes to the movie due to Peggy replacing Steve, but Ep 2 was fantastic, a mostly original story with a lot of nice and surprising changes, and Chadwick's incredible presence is still the same in animated form as it was in live-action. Always rest in peace, King.

Thanos was everything in this episode :funny:

Oh this is out already, will get on it!

The ending got me thinking about that tenth episode that was supposed to be part of this season but ended up getting pushed to the 2nd season. Maybe that episode was supposed to be the Peter/Ego stuff?

It was great, even better than the first one.
It was great to her Chadwick's voice again.

I thought this way better than the first episode, because it was so different. Captain Carter was largely a rehash of The First Avenger, so I was a bit worried all the episodes were going to be just copies of the movies, but with different characters in the same situation.

I want someone to edit footage of this episode into the scene where Thanos is viewing Nebula's memories in Endgame to make it look like he's watching Good Guy Thanos.

*Cosmo licks Thanos's face*

"That is destiny fulfilled."

"This...does put a smile on my face" is too obvious.

I rate the episode an 8 out of 10.
Big improvement.

A morphing of 2 interesting MCU angles, Black Panther and GOTG, sprinkled with a lot of nods to all kinds of good and fun MCU stuff. This concept worked better in this quirky recognizable outer space adventure. Discovering and following different versions of characters and scenarios kept the episode firing on all cylinders.

I liked it more than the premiere because it wasn’t just a straight rehash of the movie. Plus it was cool hearing most of the original voices down to the girl who worked for Collector.

But I had some issues. They really nerfed Thanos. He beat down Hulk in IW with no issue but barely held his own here against Proxima and Cull Obsidian. And Proxima got taken down by Cap and BW. Plus I don’t buy he would just give up his conquest because he talked to T’challa.

Also, we learned Peter named himself Starlord after the name his mom called him. And that did not sound like Benecio Del Toro at all. If I didn’t see his name in the credits I wouldn’t have believed it.

The part with the Collector and Hela's headdress potentially has huge implications for Thor: Love & Thunder. Specifically regarding Gorr's origin story and how it could tie up with the asgardians.

So the Collector confirmed that Hela's headdress is basically the necrosword or maybe the source of power which manifests necroswords. In the comics Gorr's power derives from the All-Black the Necrosword.

I feel like this worked a lot better than the premiere primarily because they weren't trying to retell an entire feature film in 30 minutes. The weirdest thing was the Collector. Josh Keaton sounded more like Chris Evans last week than Benico del Toro sounded like himself here.

Even better episode than the first one. Korath being a Star-Lord fanboy had me laughing all the time. Truly worthy of Chadwick Boseman's last work.
It's especially amusing because Djimon Hounsou played Black Panther in the BET cartoon.
