I've heard this said alot in the threads and I'm assuming it has something to do with the original Spider-man Universe, as in not Ultimate or Spider-girl... What exactly is it?:spidey:

See, that's what I keep sayin' but nobody wants to listen.

SHH should have a page with general knowledge questions in it filled with wikipedia links! like so:

what is earth-616?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth-616
wikipedia said:
In the fictional Marvel Comics multiverse, Earth-616 or Earth 616 is the name used to identify the primary continuity in which most Marvel Comics titles take place.

what is ultimate spider-man?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Spider-man
wikipedia said:
The series is a modernized reimagining of Marvel's long-running Spider-Man comic book franchise. Ultimate Spider-Man is set outside the Marvel Universe continuity, in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, which it introduced...
wikipedia said:
Note an alternate universe special issue of Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe in 2005 designated "Ultimate Marvel Universe" as Earth-1610.

what is spider-girl?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Girl
wikipedia said:
Spider-Girl (May "Mayday" Parker) is a comic book superheroine, active in an alternate future of the Marvel Comics universe...May "Mayday" Parker is the child of Peter and Mary Jane Parker in a future, alternate universe continuity. In the MC2 continuity, they were reunited with their baby daughter by Kaine, who found the child living with Alison Mongraine, the con artist who had kidnapped the baby on instruction from the Green Goblin.
wikipedia said:
Also, an alternate universes special of Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe revealed that the earth of MC2 heroes has its starting of "The Age of Marvels" 15 years earlier than it did on Earth-616 and is designated as Earth-982 while there are also two earths featuring alternate counterparts of Spider-Girl -- Earth-1122 (in which she is raised by Kaine) and Earth-9997, the world of Earth-X, in which she has been bonded with the Venom symbiote.
note: my bet is that the 616 baby may is being raised by kaine...

does spider-man have organic webshooters? what happened to his mechanical ones? he has new powers?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-man's_powers,_abilities,_and_equipment
wikipedia said:
In addition to his original powers, Spider-Man gains the following abilities after he fights the Queen in "Disassembled" (The Spectacular Spider-Man vol. 2 #15-20, 2004), and also after apparently dying at the hands of the vampire Morlun and being reborn ("Spider-Man: The Other," 2005).
wikipedia said:
In "Disassembled," Spider-Man develops the ability to shoot organic webbing from his wrists, making his web-shooters unnecessary....Spider-Man can mentally communicate with arthropods...
He also has night vision and stingers, gained from the Other, when he died and was reborn in a cocoon. (wikipedia doesnt distill it down this well!)

yeah... i'm gonna stop now. you get the point...

In one word..."garbage".

616 is garbage.

you, sir, need to "shhhhh"

the latest civil war tie-ins are gold

and where's darth? he needs to start an official spider-man stupid thread. i'll leave it up to him cos he got in on all the rest. plus if there's an x-men one then spider-man needs one

We do need a sticky thread for this not just for everyone who is sick of having to explain it, but for all the newcomers who get flamed like crazy because they were unfortunate enough to ask. :O

Either make a sticky or start typing "regular Marvel universe". - which is what I do anyway so that posters don't get confused. It's confusing enough as it is anyway without the 616 and the plethora of other numbers the universes have for them.

but if you associate 616 with regular universe then its so much easier just to type 616. its more reflex now.

If that's what you want to do, that's what you gotta do.

But I like typing out "Regular Marvel Universe" because it doesn't confuse new comic readers or new posters who never heard of 616 before.

Hell, I was reading comics for about 10 years before I ever heard the term 616 and never found out what it meant until I started posting here. :o
