What is your home town like?

I live in a crowded town about an hour or so outside of San Francisco. There's a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station, and the train will take you right to SF or Oakland and most points inbetween. It has a very large Asian-American population and a sister city in the Philippines. This was originally three neighboring rural towns with farms everywhere, but it has since combined into a single suburb with only a few farms remaining on the outskirts of town.

I live in a fairly typical moderately sized Midwestern town. Its a quiet, peaceful place with lots of schools, churches and banks. There is no central business, just a lot of retail stores. Its pretty conservative politically and the general feeling can be summed up as "Don't rock the boat."

The stability is a good thing and a bad thing. Its nice to know that no one will break into my home but there is a kind of Pleasantville/Stepford Wives feeling. People got upset a few years ago when the Gay Games had an event on my town's lake. They also had a small controversy when a Hooters restaurant opened. There was talk of a teen center, but people didnt want a gathering place for teenagers.

The whole feeling is like "Sit still and be good."

What is your town like?

That sounds exactly like my town, except there are multiple Hooters and Sex Shops, fireworks are legal and shot randomly throughout the year, and there are Meth labs in the woods.

^I see, and....for mapping purposes, where exactly is this place located?

:o

A sex shop? Oh dear, no. Someone tried to open a pawn shop not long ago and its permit was denied because it was considered inappropriate. The Hooters closed down a few years ago and there is a Chick-fil-A in that spot now.

No one had moral qualms about that. :o

Ain't nobody gonna say no to some Jesus chicken.

Hooters sells food with the promise of ogling women. Chick-Fil-A sells food with cows that can't spell.

I don't see a moral quandary there at all.

On topic, Brooklyn, NY. It's cool, though it's getting less so due to the hipster influx.

There is a Porn shop (Dr. X, love that name) about 1 mile from my house behind a gas station that also has a BBQ tent in the parking lot. There is a Biker Bar across the street, both sell fireworks in the summer and have huge firework displays for whatever excuse they can find to shoot them. I always hear fireworks randomly at night, or during the day. They could be meth labs blowing up, I can't always tell.

When I first moved in the neighborhood, I was given a flyer by a guy in a truck, that welcomed me as 'brother' with a big smile and shook my hand. When I opened it, I was so moved by their hospitality to allow me to join their neighborly activities. I scanned the flyer for memory:

I was born and raised in a little north Alabama town that currently is most known for it's large Mexican and Guatemalan immigrant population. It's seen more growth over the years because of it and the downtown area has been revitalized to an extent, some of the old worn out buildings are now bakeries or shops. A new elementary school was built in part to accommodate all the children being born here, and the then a year or so ago the hospital stopped delivering babies because it was losing money doing so.

I miss living there at times, even as boring as it could be.

There's nothing wrong with boring. It's a good place to raise a family.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Once a year, this thing dances around the town followed by a bunch of drummers. It chases children and there is a weird ceremony where people get headbutted in the bum by it.

I live in a town called Longmont. It's in Colorado in the foothills of The Rocky Mountains.

My town used to be a KKK outpost during the late 1890's/early 1900's, now it is full of Hispanic folk (ironic? Yes) and old folks homes.

My hometown is a fairly big city, there is 15 Dunkin Donuts there.

I hate my town. A good chunk of people here are whiny rig pigs and farmers, I hope one day I can move to the other side of the planet.

So it looks like most Hypesters live in massive metropolitan areas or the middle of nowhere.

Remember Camden county on My Name is Earl? Or Pawnee in Parks and Recreation? Yea, for years I've sweared both were based off my home town. Good ol' Owensboro KY. This place is sad sometimes

Closest town is about six minutes away.

The only thing I have to say for the country is you have your privacy.

I'm currently living in Los Angeles, but I was born in Bakerfield, CA which is 2 hours north of it.

Compared to LA Bakersfield is I guess you could say a small city with just 2 malls but they do have all the stores like Target, Walmart, Best Buy, everytime I go I can sense how far removed it is from a big city and during the Summer is gets hotter than a mother over there.

FUN FACT: this actress Marguerite Moreau went to my Junior High in the 90's and is probably best known for being in The Mighty Duck movies.

I drove through Bakersfield once in July, it was hot as hell, but nothing compared to the swamp ass you get in the Southern US.

Sounds only slightly less crazy than the Gloucester Cheese Cooper's Hill run :woot:

Running down a insane steep hill after a piece of cheese is how you end up like the Yarp guy from Hot Fuzz :cwink:

I live about 30 minutes away from D.C. in a nice suburban neighborhood.

It's a nice place.

I live in a town called Savonlinna. Very nice and quiet place. I like to live here and have no desire to move away right now.
