Golden retriever for sure. You can say they might be too big, but they are some of the best dogs you can get for kids.

Go for a female Golden. Great with children, and such a beautiful, beautiful animal. All you need is to get them outside a couple of times a week and give them some excercise. It would also be great to find a park where the children could play with the dog, because these pups LOVE to play anytime. They also can be extremely chill at times in the home, so there's a good balance with that and the playfullness. All around great dogs. I can guarantee there won't be any problems with the dog and the kids if the dog is brought up right.

Also, these dogs seem to have much more of a connection with their owners than some other dogs, and that's important for the kids and adults.

You can get that same connection that Air Bud had with Josh. :o

He lives in a small condo/apartment and is getting a puppy for his daughter for her 4th b-day. He also has a baby who will be 8 month by the time they buy it.

Suggestions?

Personally, getting a dog for an apartment is bad.You should not get one, since the dog will bark, and its another living creature.Which means you will need to feed it,play with it,clothe it,and love it.The dog must be small, and quiet.Easy to care for.

We lost our 13 year old Pomeranian not too long ago, but he was a great little dog (and I usually don't like little dogs). He lived with my wife in NYC for 9 years and he did great with apartment and city living (though he liked our back yard a whole lot more once he moved here). He was also great with kids. My nephews used to chase him around our back yard for hours when he was a little younger and more spry and he was great with them. Never once bit them, even when they were a little rough with him. And he was DAMN smart, too. He had an extensive vocabulary in both English and Spanish. We had to spell words out in front of him if we didn't want him to know what we were talking about. Heh!

Dogs are obnoxious, get a kitten.

Agreed: dog + apartment + 2 children under the age of 10 = VERY BAD IDEA

He should at least wait until the youngest child is 4 before he gets either a dog or a cat. (Unless, of course, he wants his kids to get ringworm).

If he MUST get a dog now, then he should buy a robot dog.

I'm sorry, but that's a bit of an alarmist statement. My brother and I both were around animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, cows, horses, chickens) from the day we were born and neither of us ever got ringworm. Children who grow up with animals usually grow up very well adjusted and without incident, IMHO.

If he's getting a small condo dog, then get a miniture smooth-hair dachshund. Dachshunds sometimes aren't good with little kids because they (the dogs) get scared by kids. But if the puppy is raised around pre-schoolers it will get used to them.

Plus, mini dachsies are the cutest animals in the world! :)

What would you guys recommend for a 4 year old who chronically wets his bed?

why doesn't your friend take his/her daughter to the pet store and let her pick one out...

Whichever one tastes better.

I also grew up with lots of pets (our record for most pets at 1 time was 3 adult cats, 12 kittens, 6 puppies, 1 budgie and a tank full of fresh water aquarium fish). However, in a small apartment with 2 very small children, I simply don't think it's a very good idea. Wait until they're both old enough to respect the animals.

I guess I come from the "It's never too early to learn how to respect animals" school, as that's how I was raised.
