I remember Marc Webb saying "Think bigger" in a couple of his interviews as well. What's interesting about that is it indicates that they genuinely thought TASM2 was going to be a smashing box office hit across the board.

I think this also. Sony thought ASM2 was gonna be a real winner 'across the board'--critics, BO, audiences, etc. You could tell they were excited about the movie when they had those special premieres of the movie for critics, press, guests. With ASM they had an embargo on reviews being released until the movie came out in theaters. Kind of a different situation. Sony put all their eggs in one basket with this production...it didn't pan out like I'm sure they were hoping. My guess is they were looking to cross the Billion dollar mark.

Completely stupid idea, since it will never happen, but I wish they did a reboot in the MCU but keep Andrew Garfield. The starting point could be Spidey revealing himself to be Peter Parket ala Civil War (I mean does the GA really need any background on Spiderman?)

Yeah, I think it was supposed to be their springboard into Spider-man film universe, its probably why they allowed the budget to get as high as it is rumoured to have reached despite Sony supposedly wanting to get the budget under control after ASM1.

As long as they'd keep Garfield, I'd be all set.

The whole thing with Avengers including the Oscorp tower... Was that ever even confirmed by anyone at Sony?

Nostalgia is hindering judgement for some people. Garfield is easily a better Spider-man than Tobey. The new films are both better than Spidey 1 and Spidey 3 from old Raimi days!

If you are being sarcastic, then good. But these kind of posts are expressly the reason why the Spidey forums were locked for a week or so.

I'm just wondering how Sony did this Iron-Man movie?! How does that make sense?

Indeed.

I think they believed that TASM2 would ride the coattails of the decent outing by TASM1. And, as you said, their excitement was evident in their interviews and appearances on television. Even Emma, Andrew, and some of the other members of the cast seemed anxious for the release, but I think it was primarily because of the way the movie ended.

The funny thing is, their excitement got me stoked as well. When I saw certain bits in the trailer, such as Harry telling Peter that Oscorp had been watching him, I was thinking that the "untold story" might end up being much better than we thought it would.

The public's backlash is the reason for the confusion about the spinoffs, rumors, and TASM3. Sony is shocked. They had no backup plan as to which direction they would go if TASM2 didn't work out, in my opinion. I'm starting to think that's how much they believed in it.

Me too! I still have no idea why Sony cut that scene? it even explained how the Goblin suit works.. why would they cut such integral part of the story?

My gut tells me that even with the lukewarm reception to TASM2, Sony will stick to the original plan. We almost got what was certain to be an absolute debacle with SM4, which was mercifully canned, even after SM3 got a similarly middling reception. I'm willing to see what happens with S6, mostly because we can have all these villains in one movie without crowding it with hero/love interest stories. Plus, even with Arad and Sony meddling, I think Goddard is still more than capable of writing and directing a good movie.

No question Sinister Six will make or Break ASM3. I think that is the reason there is a two year gap between S6 and ASM3 rather than the movies being filmed at the same time. So they can see the reaction of S6. An underwhelming reception will no doubt see Sony pull the plug on ASM3.

Why let TASM 3 hang in the balance of the S6 movie? I would have had TASM 3 come out first if they want a sure thing. Finish assembling the six, then have the Sinister 6 movie be Spidey vs. the six.

Same here...but...once again Sony is proving they fail miserably at knowing what audiences want and how to craft a decent story; that is when they don't let directors tell the story. We know they can, if you look at SM1 & 2 but, at some point, they feel they can do better.

There's NO logical explanation (story wise) to rush a S6 when we have only seen 3 villains.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach confirmed it. Kevin Feige confirmed it as well. That said, both noted that a deal was "never close to to happening". Later, it was revealed to be because of time constraints. It never progressed past talks.

Feige would go on to say that a crossover, while cool, probably wouldn't happen anytime soon due to Marvel and Sony having their own plans for their own universes. But obviously...... things have changed for Sony. And Marvel...... they've gone ahead and greenlighted one of the biggest stories to ever feature him.

Honestly wouldn't take much to bump ASM3 BO significantly with an MCU tie-in. Besides being a good film of course, all you'd need is a SLJ cameo or some mentions of Stark Industries, while including that stuff in the promos and marketing. Make it seem as an event Spidey movie with a much grander scope. Of course Disney probably wouldn't want to throw that bone to Sony, but Sony is in a huge bind now. They need to make something happen sooner rather than later with this franchise. If I were Arad, I would negotiate turning over the franchise back to Marvel so long as I can make another couple Spidey films within some loose context of the MCU. It would build up a lot of hype and excitement, which is what Spidey needs right now. This deal needs to happen before the end of the year or first quarter next year if both parties are serious about it though.

This. Especially about the timing of the deal. It has to happen soon.
