'All they're doing is taking their stock and marking the price down'

SCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out - which he predicts will occur by the end of the month.

Reeves was speaking at an E3 event to announce the introduction of a new PS3 bundle in Europe. When asked about possible criticisms over whether SCEE should have given consumers the option to pay a lower price, as SCEA has done, he replied, "Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, "In America, yes."

SCEA announced a USD 100 price cut for PlayStation 3 earlier this week. A new 80GB model will come bundled with a copy of Motorstorm and will retail for USD 599.

The full interview with Reeves is now on GamesIndustry.biz.

I'm speechless.

I was going to get my PS3 after I got my HDTV in a few months to.:csad:

It's not announced on any of the other major gaming sites..I call BS.Besides,David Reeves is Sony Europe.

I really hope so. Then again, why would he say this in the first place?

I honestly don't think Sony can be THIS stupid.

This better be debunked and I'm holding out some hope that it is since Sony has hilariously stupid miscommunication between executives and their PR groups.

What additionally doesn't make sense is that the 80 gig BOX says limited edition? Wtf?

If it's true and they effectively keep the 80 gig at 599, then it's like mind bogglingly moronic (yet stupider then the Elite).

Maybe the Masochists inside Sony couldn't stand that they had a good E3 showing and had to mess it up somehow?!?

EDIT: Probably what's happening is Sony is marking down the 60 gig to clear out stock, initially the 80 gig which comes in a bundle will be 599. So if you want your PS3 at 500 dollars essentially take advantage of the limited time offer.

Then 60 gig stock is cleared out at the 80 gig 'limited edition' which is a bundle that comes will Motorstorm will retail for 499 without the game.

Provided Sony isn't insane.

The 80 gig Sku is cheaper for Sony to produce since it has the EE/GS removed entirely and uses the Software emulation, but they couldn't price the 80 gig SKU the same as the 60 gig or no one would buy the old 60 gig stock.

You have to wonder though how SCEE president David Reeves could be this stupid though, to present the information like this is a huge mistake and PR nightmare, he's either stupid or purposefully wanted to undermine SCEA which would make him stupid yet again.

It's mind boggling.

I've just got a video on GFAQS of Kaz saying the same thing. They drop the price just to cancel that SKU altogether. Oh, Sony...

Here's the link to the awesome ass kicking statement that makes as much sense as this= pongogor

Ok, my thoughts.

Beyond stupid!

I mean sure, it's a brilliant move to get the current systems selling and off shelves, but then when they are all gone before Christmas, and parents go in looking for the reduced PS3 for little Timmy only to be told that the PS3 is back up to $600, but hey, "it comes with more hard drive space and a game" that's simply not going to fly with most consumers. It's almost "bait and switch" in my opinion.

Look, Sony kept this hush hush. It only leaked out when the president of Sony Europe sought to please their consumer base by letting them know that America wasn't getting a special price cut, but instead only a mark down. Why didn't we hear this at E3? Instead we we're lead to believe that the price cut so many wanted had arrived. The whole time Sony execs. are laughing because the $600 price tag will be back soon!

In the video interview with Kaz (my last link posted) he flat out states that the 80gb PS3 will be priced at $600 so if anyone thinks it's going to be $499 you can forget it. Even if Sony would decide to do that to please angry customers, they almost can't. If thousands rush out now and buy the 60gb PS3 for $500 only to discover they could have waited on the 80gb model with a free game for the same price, that's not going to go over very well either. It's like Sega execs. took over at Sony or something. Watching them flick away the top spot in the industry with one stupid mistake after another is amazing.

I think the 60G version is replacing the 20G model, and the 80G model is replacing the 60G,so therefore, there will always be 2 differant versions of PS3 on market.

Well this could fall in line with the rumors of another price cut at the holiday season. With just one sku 80 gig droping in price like Zen said to $499.99.

I hope you're right, I was gonna buy a PS3.

You almost had me again, Zenien! :csad:

I don't see how its true, the 80 GB is limited edition.

perhaps the limited part is the inclusion of Motorstorm. Unless once all the 60GBs are gone the 80GB drops to $499 (minus Motorstorm) then this is an AWFUL decision and makes no sense. Honestly no company could be that stupid

I CANNOT ****ING BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!:cmad: :cmad: :cmad:

After a wonderful E3, you do this??!?!?!?!?!?

Why not just make the 80 gig $499 and the 60 gig $459, since the 80 gig is cheaper to make?

BASTARDS!!

wait for an official announcement. Then we can storm the gates.:o

WTF 600 bucks? I dont even want Motorstorm! I just want MGS4! That will be close to 700 bucks???!!!  :down

Same. I don't give a damn about Motorstorm. WHy not at least bundle it with Ninja Gaiden Sigma? Moreover, who honestly needs 80 gigs? Seriously. What the hell do you need 80 gigs for?

Confirmed.

But wait, http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6427&Itemid=2

Confusion surrounds the future of the $499 60Gig version of PS3. SCEA has denied 'inaccurate' reports that its $100 price cut on the 60Gig PS3 is simply a move to clear stock before offering solely the higher priced 80Gig version. But different stories are coming of of the company all the time. Kaz Hirai seems to think the $499 SKU is a goner.

Image A spokesperson for Sony in the US told Next-Gen, "As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."

Officials at Sony Computer entertainment Europe - including president David Reeves - had said that the US price would still be $599 because that would be the only model on offer once 60Gig stocks ran out. If true, this would have rendered the $100 price cut a virtually pointless gesture, meaning that PS3 had not been cut in price, but was simply being offered with extra memory and a bundled game.

Questions will now be raised about the company's long term plans for the 60Gig version and for its dual pricing strategy as well as its ability to stay on-message.

SCEA has reacted with puzzlement to the European perspective, suggesting that there may have been an incorrect interpretation. The spokesperson said, “Those quotes from David Reeves are not accurate. He said that if they had lowered the price in Europe, that territory would have run out of their current inventory by the end of July.”

Nevertheless, Kaz Hirai himself says the one SKU strategy is the plan. He told Scandinavian website VGTV, "[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the US, we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two. We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the $600 SKU."

Previously, a senior PR at Sony in London had backed Reeves statement, confirming that he had been talking about the US market, though the PR later distanced London from the remarks, telling Next-Gen, “I believe that is the plan, but SCEA has not formally made an announcement on any timeframe. As it affects the US you should confirm with SCEA.
”

SCEA subsequently denied the story entirely. However, questions will now be raised about the company's long term plans for the 60Gig version and for its $599 / $499 pricing strategy as well as its ability to stay on-message. We're waiting for clarification on some of these issues from SCEA.

Huh?

I KNOW, I SAW THAT AND READ THIS INTERVIEW,

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6174962.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;1

BUT I THINK THERE'S MORE TO THIS THAN WHAT THEY CAN SAY RIGHT NOW!!! WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS, THAT IF THEY ARE TRYING TO GET RID OF THE 60GIG MODEL AND WILL IN DUE TIME REPLACE IT WITH THE 80GIG MODEL, THEY CAN'T VERY WELL SAY RIGHT NOW THAT IN TIME THE 80GIG MODEL WILL HAVE THE PRICE OF THE 60GIG MODEL, BECAUSE THEN PEOPLE WOULD JUST WAIT FOR THAT AND THEY WOULD NEVER GET RID OF THEIR STOCK!!! SO IT MAKES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE TO WAIT UNTIL THEY'VE GOTTEN RID OF ALL THE 60GIG MODELS TO REDUCE THE PRICE OF THE 80GIG TO $499, ANYWAY THAT'S MY THEORY!!!:D:up:

That makes sense. I just edited my last post though, so read how SCEA is denying the rumors. Not sure what to believe. I just needed more time to get the PS3 after I paid $1800 for my HDTV, that's all.

SONY IS A HUGE COMPANY, I THINK IT MIGHT JUST BE MISCOMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE BRANCHES OF THE COMPANY, I THINK IT WOULD BE WISE TO JUST WAIT AND SEE WHAT DEVELOPS!!! ON A LIGHTER NOTE WHAT SIZE IS YOUR TV, I HAVE A 50" SONY LCD HDTV, WHICH DOUBLES AS MY PC MONITOR!!!;):D:up:

Playstation blog has something about this saying that there is going to be 2 SKU's in the market and they are not getting rid of the 60G model. Alot of miscommunication going on seems like.I personally think 1 version is the way to go,less confusion.
