The Haunting (1963)

Having recently watched Mike Flanagan's Netflix mini-series The Haunting of Hill House, I decided to revisit this again. For me it is the gold standard for haunted house movies. It epitomises the 'less is more' approach that (I believe) is so important in selling a ghost story. Nothing is so frightening as our own worst imaginings. And whilst I like Flanagan's version, he has a tendency to show too much. I enjoy seeing creepy ghosts as much as anyone (I love The Ring, The Grudge, The Woman in Black, Flanagan's own The Haunting of Bly Manor), but something should be held back - at least in the early stages. Let our minds fill in the blanks. Director Robert Wise does that here - and then some. You don't see any ghosts. Not one. But you know they're there. You can feel them. The atmosphere is filled with more dread and threat than any other film I've seen (only Jaws comes close). The tension and fear are almost smothering. Direction, acting, writing, photography, lighting, set design, and - especially - sound, are all perfect. I cannot fault this film. It has never been anything other than a 10/10 for me.

BABY SISTER (1983)

This made for TV movie, starring the ever adorable Phoebe Cates ( Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Gremlins ) is a forbidden- romance melodrama, about a college drop out, who comes to live with her big sister in LA ,and ends up falling for her sister's boyfriend .

The May/ December affair, needless to say , doesn't turn out well for all involved.

It's very much a product of it's time, and the soundtrack is sort of a fusion between the disco sounding groves of the late 70s, with the steamy sax sound that marked the 80s.

Cates, as usual, does a good job playing a young person, who hasn't figured out what she wants to do with the rest of her life .

This seemed to be released after her breakout role in Fast Times At Ridgemont High , but before the classic Gremlins.

Ted Wass ( Blossom , Soap ) plays the object her affections , while Pamela Bellwood ( Dynasty) plays Cate's older sister , too busy with work to be aware of the burgeoning affair between her Boyfriend, and her kid sister.

Woah, its been a while since I watched this and while I still think 3 is the best overall this is still an epic masterpiece of action film making. Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada are just the icing on an already perfectly formed cake.
