Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019)
One of the summer event films where you're going to need to check your expectations at the door and check them real closely. Are you going into this movie as a fan of the 2014 Gareth Edwards film who appreciated the sensitive and grounded approach to the larger-than-life ideas therein? If so, you may be sorely disappointed by the rather uncouth and matter-of-fact nature of things this time around. Are you walking in as someone who was tremendously let down by the 2014 predecessor's lack of action and kaiju combat in favor of dry character work and performances? Because you may have just gotten a movie that flies in the face of all that, for better or worse. Are you somewhere betwixt these two groups, enjoying the 2014 film for what it was, but understanding the need for certain elements to change? Well you might just end up in the camp that this reviewer's planted his flag within. This movie is fine. The action is thrilling and brilliantly rendered, featuring a hefty number of moments that'll make you smile. The character work is spotty at best, featuring some of the more head-scratchingly misguided attempts at depth I've seen in a while, but you're at least given a protagonist that has more emotional drive than the 2014 film did. The performances get the job done, with some actors bringing a bit too much to the table than others (I'm looking at you Bradley Whitford). And the lore is -- as always -- sopping wet with imagination and creativity. In short, it's imperfect, but a worthwhile time at the cinema, to be sure.
Talked about this on a recent podcast that I help out with now and again. Feel free to take a look!
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Black Swan (2010)
THE GIRL WHO LEAPED THROUGH TIME
Quality = 9/10
Joy = 10/10
I loved it when I first saw it, loved it when I saw it again, and I still love it.
The Church (1989)
THE HOUND OF BASKERVILLES
Quality = 9/10
Joy = 8/10
A Sherlock Holmes movie that has Christopher Lee. What's not to like?
I love that version
MONSTER HUNT 2
THE DRIVER (1978)
Quality = 8.5/10
Joy = 9/10
Critics were unfair to this movie when it was new, it's a very good action thriller, with an interesting ending.
I think this movie may have inspired some other cool stuff like the Transporter (the fun first one), and possibly had an influence on what John Wick could be like.
Also; Nicholas Winden Refn could have took a few lessons from this before making his garbage movie he released in 2011 with its awkward dialogue, messy plotting, annoying sound that stand for music, and head scratching developments and twists.
Black Mama White Mama (1973)
Stand by Me (1986)
Toy Story 2
X-Men: Days of Future Past (theatrical)
Good movie....I always like a Walter Hill film. I have a decent collection of movie posters that I change out on my wall every now and then. Here's the poster from THE DRIVER that was up a couple of years ago.
Quality = 8/10
Joy = 7/10
Opening comments made me think this was somehow related to the Maze Runner, but it was the wrong impression.
It's interesting, I enjoyed it fairly enough to not be bored, but not enough to want to watch it again.
This poster looks really cool.
Toy Story 4
