    SHAFT

SHAFT has morphed into a buddy cop....estranged father and son action comedy?

PRAISE: Samuel L. Jackson and Regina Hall, fortunately overcome the lameness of the films script several times.Director Tim Story wisely gives them a multitude of moments to shine.
I did laugh out loud at some of the antics, jokes and oneliners more than i thought i would.I give the movie points for having the balls to not be politically correct especially in todays climate.

PROBLEMS :Jesse T. Usher as Shaft Jr.,is as lame as advertised. The character and the actor feel like they belong in one of those awkward and silly cop but still comes out on top movies.
His boss has no confidence in him and his father hits him with an avalanche of put downs.Only his mother Maya Babanikos (Regina Hall) and Dr. Sasha (Alexandra Shipp)root for him.
The moments of fun are all to brief as this slowly but surely becomes something generic. If you cant figure out who the villains will be after they first appear on screen ,you may need a visit to an ophthalmologist.

    Regina Hall ...call me

I seem to remember that after he adapted it and played for Diana's funeral or remembrance service he said he'd never play it again. Maybe he stipulated that it not be used.

Of course that may just have been referring to the Diana version.

At best this was mediocre... at worst this was a lazy cash grab and a waste of resources. Despite everything looking sleek and shiny, this couldn't felt more cold and by the numbers. It's about the same in quality as the last one, but it doesn't have Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith's charm to carry it. Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth tried saving it with their on screen chemistry, but the story was zipping by way too fast for anything to happen naturally. The movie is ultimately just a collection of gags and set pieces that doesn't do anything new or interesting. For me Kumail Nanjiani was probably the only character had worked for me. Overall, a it's big meh.

    Shaft

Yet another dud for the summer. This has all the qualities of being a bad tv movie particularly for the BET crowd. The 2000 Shaft movie looks like a all time classic compared to this. Outside of the formulaic plot, this feels out of place and out of time with today's world. I will say the best thing about this movie is the opening and the opening titles. Outside of that, it's a bore.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019)

One of the summer event films where you're going to need to check your expectations at the door and check them real closely. Are you going into this movie as a fan of the 2014 Gareth Edwards film who appreciated the sensitive and grounded approach to the larger-than-life ideas therein? If so, you may be sorely disappointed by the rather uncouth and matter-of-fact nature of things this time around. Are you walking in as someone who was tremendously let down by the 2014 predecessor's lack of action and kaiju combat in favor of dry character work and performances? Because you may have just gotten a movie that flies in the face of all that, for better or worse. Are you somewhere betwixt these two groups, enjoying the 2014 film for what it was, but understanding the need for certain elements to change? Well you might just end up in the camp that this reviewer's planted his flag within. This movie is fine. The action is thrilling and brilliantly rendered, featuring a hefty number of moments that'll make you smile. The character work is spotty at best, featuring some of the more head-scratchingly misguided attempts at depth I've seen in a while, but you're at least given a protagonist that has more emotional drive than the 2014 film did. The performances get the job done, with some actors bringing a bit too much to the table than others (I'm looking at you Bradley Whitford). And the lore is -- as always -- sopping wet with imagination and creativity. In short, it's imperfect, but a worthwhile time at the cinema, to be sure.

    (6.5/10)

Talked about this on a recent podcast that I help out with now and again. Feel free to take a look!
