I was just musing as to how I'd make a JLA movie and it struck me that if there is a single character that would most need a kick-ass theme, one that would need to be a ear-worm that you could never get fully out of your head, it would be Darkseid, who would, of course, be the villain of the JLA movie.

But what would it sound most like?

The Imperial March? It's the current theme music for evil. Only problem is that Darkseid is so above mere domination of a Galaxy, which would require the composer of a JLA movie to out-do the Imperial March in awesomeness. Don't see that happening, even if they could somehow get John Williams to score a movie with Darkseid in it.

"Roar"? That was the music that played over the credits for "Cloverfield". It is awesome, and even if you haven't seen Cloverfield I heartily recommend getting it off Itunes or a similar service. It's a tribute to the scores of Kaiju movies, especially Godzilla. Only it's even more awesome.

Lux Aeterna? For those of you who don't know what that is, just go and Youtube it. Yeah, it's that song. Personally, sounds a bit too fast for somebody like Darkseid.

Ride of the Valkyries? Personally, same complaint I have with Lux Aeterna, just doesn't sound like the music that would play as Darkseid shows up on Earth. (Parademons is another story)

The Ark Theme (don't think that's the real name)? That's the forboding, power-of-god-is-gonna-melt-your-Nazi-faces-off music that played in several Ark of the Covenant related scenes in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Anything that can make the audience **** their pants after the first two notes

The entire Fourth World/New Gods movie should be straight up Wagnerian (definitely in music, possibly in plotline), so while "Valkyries" is not the specific song I would use the play its from is definitely the inspiration needed.

I imagine Darkseid having music from the original Planet of the Apes. Or from 300.

Mars by Holst was actually the inspiration for Darth Vaders theme. Star Wars being one of the original galaxy movie type things to be taken seriously left Williams with little inspiration so he looked to Holst who named all his pieces after planets. Not that its not a legitmate source for a theme just that it is very similar to one of your original choices.

imperial march, i read somewhere george lucas based Star Wars off the Fourth world, but won't admit it.

Hes openly admitted that the project evolved from his desire to direct Flash Gordon. Never heard of the Fourth World thing, but I see parallels

Huh, never heard of that darkseid26. Only Star Wars/Fourth World connection I could remember was Mark Hamill (a total Comic book geek even before he was Luke) commented on how Darth Vader was similar to villains like Darkseid and Dr. Doom.

Steve Jablonsky's "Decepticons" theme would be a great fit too. [YT]Yw9ymA-x8J8[/YT]

David Arnold's Gou'ald theme from Stargate. Theme starts at 1:40 on the clip below.

love those examples!

it would have to be really scary with deep bass

Another thing that could be cool would be a big choir chanting. Nothing is more freaky then chanting. Duel of the Fates, for example, was probably the best thing in Episode I of Star Wars. Or "Dies Irae", which can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_YSEbAWA0Y which Wikipedia says is basically a chant about the end of the world and judgement day.

Wouldn't it be awesome if Darkseid's theme was people chanting stuff you think would be in the Anti-Life equation? Like, chanting stuff (in latin) about how Darkseid will totally take away free will, make the streets run red, kick your dog, turn the skies red, make you feel so bad that despair will look like happiness and then maybe he'll kill you, if you are lucky. that'd be awesomely scary if done right.

Dies Irae can definitely work, but its usually not used for long periods of time. I could be wrong but Im fairly confident.

Like the Imperial March

It needs to be like the Imperial March (which is Wagnerian like).

As an aside, the JLA's theme would have to be Olympian-sounding. Wait a sec... that gives me another idea!

What would really be great is for them to let Darkseid be the villian in the next Superman movie.

...that's nice.

Anyway, I kind of imagined that Darkseid's theme would be something akin to this:

Something that evokes the cosmic nature of the character. Because he's not just a dictator. He's a nigh omnipotent science-god from space.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I stumbled across this conversation during a Google search and I couldn't resist chiming in! Additionally, the topic is freshly relevant, since a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie seems more inevitable than ever with the success of AVENGERS -- and Darkseid must surely be on the short-list of big bads.

Anyway, it's difficult for me to imagine any composer topping Shirley Walker's amazing theme for Darkseid from SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES! You can hear its first appearance in the show here:

And a few more great examples (spoilers ahead, obviously):

That's not even including any clips from the series finale, "Legacy!"

Ever since the show aired, this has been THE Darkseid theme I hear in my head when I read the comics. To me, it's as associated with Darkseid as the Imperial March is with Darth Vader. They obviously wouldn't use it in a new feature film, but Walker's theme is the theme to beat IMHO.

Something dark and industrial with a mix of the Hellraiser theme.

When I saw the title I thought Imperial March, lo and behold it was the first choice in the poll. So there you go.

I'd want something much more disturbing. Like a creepy deafening and faint white noise and ear-ringing type sound in his presence. Completely beyond us, not just a badass alien.
